Agree. And we don’t really know what TJ is saying when talking to the refs. He very well may be getting his point across without looking like a screaming lunatic
Yup! Also want to add there was a one of those team videos that came out where TJ said something along the lines of "I don't see the point at complaining about calls to refs, not once have I ever seen a ref say you know, you're right and change the call". From listening to TJ, he is a highly aware person. If you think you have a better understanding of refs in big time college basketball than him, you are mistaken.

There are many things he does well, and many he needs improvement at. How to work an officiating crew is one of the latter.

I can't help but laugh at all you guys thinking TJ needs to go nuclear on a ref. You're the same guys who, when criticized, double down on your position - like a ref wouldn't do the same.

Like if you were a referee and a coach tore into you, I guarantee your response would be "Hey coach, I'm the ref. You coach your team and I'll call the game. I'm just gonna keep calling what I see."

I prefer TJs mentality and demeanor but I can agree that I wish he’d be more stern towards the officials when bad calls happen. I do not agree that he needs to get more technicals. If him being more stern leads to some, fine, but just saying “he needs to get T’d up more” seems overly simplistic imo.

I'm just surprised at how many people ***** about refs, but don't think coaches have any influence on their calls.

If he gets a technical yesterday, we probably lose, it was much too close of a game to give K State any freebies.

Teams take on the identity of their coach. I’d much rather hav an even keel team than a team like WV who ******* any time they get a foul. That does not endear you to officials.

You don’t give opponents free chances at points. That’s stupid.

Not exactly sure.

Hasn’t made sweet 16? What are you talking about?

I agree TJ could be a little more vocal and work the refs. Even doing what Roy Williams used to do at Kansas and send one of the leaders on the team (I remember him sending Jacques Vaughn) to chat it up with the refs during free throws. Work the refs and stay in their ear…too quiet and they think they can roll you.

However, TJ doesn’t need to stomp his feet and scream for no reason…but when the situation warrants it and it won’t negatively impact our team (late in a game that’s out of reach), I say let the zebras have it. All craziness in moderation please.

I think there's a misconception that coaches who get technicals on purpose are doing it to send a message to the refs. It seems like most of the time they are trying to send a message to their own team, sort of an "I've got your back" thing. I think TJ tries to send that message in other ways.

I've also heard refs say they have to be so focused on watching their part of the court play after play after play that they often don't really register what anyone is saying to them or at them on a conscious level.

To the original poster, no, TJ doesn't need to get a T. Maybe he could work the refs a little harder, but that is a thin line. The last two games have been pretty frustrating, because Huggy and Weber are both great at working the refs, and it shows.

TJ's time would be better spent working on inbound plays and passes on the perimeter. Both those game shouldn't have been that close. Might want to look at what they are doing at the start of games too. Things are a lot easier if you don't get down big in the first half.

TJ Otzelberger needs to get after the refs more often. The cross-arms side-eye ain't cutting it. Time to throw his arms up and maybe yell a little bit. The reffing vs. ISU this year has been atrocious.

Ever wonder why Kansas gets so many calls? $$$ and see how Bill Self coaches.

Discuss.
I think he's a first year HC and does not want to get branded as a baby around the league. So I do understand it some.

But yeah I think the fans wouldn't mind to see some more ass chewing out of TJ. He's earned it this year that's for sure. The guy can coach at a super high level.

People here are making this out to be completely binary. Either coach is going crazy and team follows suit or everyone just takes this and moves on with no objection.

Anyone who has ever played a minute or basketball knows the coach is always going to get away with more than the players. Agree that players are going to reflect their coach to one degree or the other. But I think - if coached correctly - they’d also fall in line if coach said “you guys just focus on the next play and let me work on the refs”.

There are plenty of teams whose players manage to stay in line while their coaches go to work on the refs.

I have not reffed a lot, but I know that when I make a close call or even screw up I appreciate the coach that tells me that I screwed the pooch quietly and just between us more than the coach that screams and yells and tries to make as big of a scene as possible. Does either influence me? Conciously, no, but unconciously I think it probably sways me more toward the guy who didn't try to show me up in front of the entire stadium.

I liked the Fred style. When there was something, he would wander by th ref and say and/or point something out during play. He didn’t go Larry style on them but he was pointing out things he caught that they didn’t. You can work the refs without screaming.
