How long do you think it will be before we have to redo GMAC's contract after EIU paid this guy $1.2 plus bonuses?

At least Pollard got one or two years of reasonableness out of GMAC before the salary explosion we are seeing now.

My point is I think EIU grossly overpaid for what they got!

Coach Mac will sign a contract extension shortly, with maybe some additional incentives.....I'm guessing before school is out...

Hard to say if they overpaid, but it sure seems like we got a great bargain by contrast! As long as Pollard keeps tabs on the coffers, he will pay GM what he is worth.

I've been making the argument that they over paid for the last hour but they wont listen. 1.2 mill for a guy who didn't even win his confernce tournament this year is ridiculous. Don't bother wasting your time trying to tell them that though. They've drank enough cool-aid on this guy to last the next decade. According to them John Wooden Jr was just hired.

I think it will be another 2 years before we have to get GMac a new contract. He will have to earn his contract unlike the morons to the west who just give away money.

I agree to a point. He should have to earn more money, but I also think that this year, he did enough to warrant possibly a bigger incentive package. Not a base yet though.

Yeah, I think GMac could use a bigger base salary. 650K is low. A 100K or 50K increase seems appropriate some where in the next year.

Nothing against GMac or anyone in general, but isn't it weird to think that he makes $650,000 for coaching a basketball team? I'm sure times must be tough financially for most coaches :rolleyes5cz:. This kind of goes along the lines of greedy CEO's earning way more than they should. Again, not saying GMac or anyone is greedy, just some things in this world don't add up.

Supply and demand. If good college coaches were a dime a dozen, they wouldn't receive contracts like that.

Also, one must consider the revenue that comes in through because of Greg McDermott and the basketball program.

Whats worse is that Ferentz makes 4 million. No one who coaches in any sport deserves that much. I hate Iowa.

In a way, I agree somewhat. However, how solid is their job? How much time are the expected to put into said program? They also have to put up with loud-mouth fans and the media, as well as kids making bad choices. I only have to put up with.... 2-3 of those, and I only am going to get paid.... $25,000. Oh well, you do what you love.

Any idea what the total income is being generated by the men's basketball program? Ticket sales, concessions, parking and tv money.

I think it also has something to do with none of the money being earned being able to go to the players. If you can't attract players by paying them, the best way to attract them seems to be with a top coach and top facilities. I know the players get an education and some of them have a chance to make millions. However, sometimes it strikes me as crazy that the players may hardly have any spending money, but instead the money the player helps earn by playing goes to stuff like another plasma flat screen in the locker room or another bonus for the coach.

Sometimes I wonder about all the money being thrown around in athletics. Athletes thinking they can't feed their family on 10 million a year.

It seems kind of pathetic to me that players would demand obscene amounts of money so they can add that extra room to their mansion. But what a deal it is if you can get it I guess, the problem sometimes isn't that players demand the money, but the fact that people are willing to give it to them. Some people are overpaid, but it seems that is the way it goes in the working world sometimes anyways.

The marketplace determines the going rate for the salaries of coaches.

Personally, I would like to see McDermott do something a little more "substantial" before we give him a raise and extension. 20+ wins and an NCAA run would be nice!

Why do people think McDermott needs a raise just because Iowa overpaid for their coach? As I said on another thread, Lickliter comes from a mid-major program. Iowa should not have paid more than $750,000 for a guy from a mid-major. If McDermott takes ISU to the NCAA Tournament next year, I see we take a look at increasing his pay.
