happy Columbus day, everyone! Mrs. and little cyloboclone and I are going on a nice day trip to Taos. What is everyone doing for your holiday plans?

I took it off because today is li'l SOM's eighth birthday. Spending it with seven seven and eight year olds at incredible pizza. Funny thing, he wanted to make them all wear ISU gear.
I told him not to act like that. I asked him how he'd feel if a Hawk fan made him wear black and gold. So proud. :smile:

Anyway, I recommend this place if you need a good meal. Like most things in Taos, it's got a bit of a hippyish feel to it.
Everyone who gets lost on a long trip should have a national holiday. Amelia Earhart, Steve Fossett, my wife.........
Public school teachers, students, postal workers and other government workers.
I can't believe school kids get it off anymore. I remember having to be in school this day and having the same old stories told over and over every year about the guy. I can't believe how many school days kids get off in general anymore. This has been a 5 day weekend for my kids since they had conferences last Thursday and Friday. No wonder they say our school kids are struggling against the rest of the world. When I was in school, the only day off of the first semester, after labor day, was Thanksgiving.
I think this varies greatly by district and part of the country potentially. I don't know of a single public school with today off. When I was growing up we had labor day off and usually one day in october at the end of the quarter and then the wednesday-friday of thanksgiving week.
I think having today off is just as if not more absurd than having mlk day off. I don't mean for this to come out racist and I don't mean it that way but I don't understand why we have mlk day off but not veterans day.
Public schools in the Austin area have today off, but I didn't realize some public schools in Iowa had it off as well. I never got Columbus Day off for school growing up in Ames.
Never got the day off in Iowa growing up, and my kids here in Northwest Arkansas also have school today. However the school district decided to give them next week Tuesday off for parent-teacher conferences.
The fact that I am posting here at 11:00 reveals that I do indeed have the day off. As a federal DOD employee I would rather have the day after Thanksgiving than today but I’ll use today to get some yard work done before I have total oak leaf Armageddon.
BTW, back when I was kid in public school we did get this day off but it seems that over the years this holiday is less common outside of Federal agencies.
the wife is an attorney and when the courts are closed, the firm is as well. It is a stupid holiday, that is certain, and the indian population (they don't like to be called native Americans here) gets pretty ****** today, but it is nice to get a day off!
