the wife is an attorney and when the courts are closed, the firm is as well. It is a stupid holiday, that is certain, and the indian population (they don't like to be called native Americans here) gets pretty ****** today, but it is nice to get a day off!

I don't see anything "stupid" about it.

Awww Columbus day. Nothing like sitting back and cracking open a can of small pox to celebrate centuries of unprecedented slavery and genocide.

^ Good to see you haven't been worked-over by the white guilt crowd.

Listen, we all are enlighten enough to know that we don't do nation building in the 21st century, like we did in the 1600's. We all get that, so you can spare us the speech.

But the fact is very few, if any current civilization on the globe reside on their native lands. Agreed? Heck...I'm sure there are several American Indian tribes we screwed over on land that were only currently on said land, because they killed more women and children from another, less fortunate tribe. But guess what? That was life in the wild, wild West (and not-so far west).

Human history if full of barbaric and deceitful land grabs. The problem: for some reason, a certain group of people want you to think it was invented on our soil.

The problem is we have turned that barbarism into a national holiday. Just because native tribes might have occasionally fought wars against each other doesn't make it okay to commit genocide on a MASSIVE scale against them. You're just reiterating the old colonial justifications of "well they are just savages anyway..." I'm not trying to give anyone a guilt trip, I'm just frustrated how we are being duped into celebrating historical injustice as a holiday.

^ Appreciate the response and helps me see where you're coming from (not that I agree). Probably time to drop it or this gets pushed to the cave.

Public school teachers, students, postal workers and other government workers.

I can't believe school kids get it off anymore. I remember having to be in school this day and having the same old stories told over and over every year about the guy. I can't believe how many school days kids get off in general anymore. This has been a 5 day weekend for my kids since they had conferences last Thursday and Friday. No wonder they say our school kids are struggling against the rest of the world. When I was in school, the only day off of the first semester, after labor day, was Thanksgiving.

Sorry, don't mean to steal your thunder, but I've been a public school teacher for 27 years (Ankeny). I don't get this day off. Many times like today, we have teacher inservice.

Day off?! WTH? Who has the day off and why? Today was meant for the "working class"! Glad you all could have the day off while I provided some FIT to foot the bill. Glad I could be of service!

Just kidding! Don't get your panties in a bunch, cheers!

All I want is for Veteran's Day to stop getting lumped in with these so called "holidays" like Columbus Day. Veteran's Day should be on the sam level as Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Ankeny did start more than a week ahead of most metro schools this year, so it was a nice break for my son.

For what it's worth, Veterans day is also a federal holiday and gets the same time off as Memorial Day or Labor day...
