End of year rankings matter more than pre season. Of course teams who have great recruiting classes every year are going to get the benefit of the doubt when there’s so much overturn every year with players going pro/graduating/transferring.

That's true but a team that starts the season in the top 10 has a much better chance of finishing in the top 4 with one loss than another team with only one loss who started the season unranked.

While I agree, Iowa State made it all the way up to #6 in 2020. WITH a loss to the RaginCajuns to start the year.
