Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs Iowa!
Though this was also when teams were invited earlier in the season.

ISU got the bowl's attention by starting 5-1. It just that they went 0-5-1 after that.

Something tells me they don't get that invite if invites were made the way they are today
Why does the 0-5-1 finish not surprise me?

I understand the concept ... internal roster-building and "real-game" experience ... but to me, that's a "bonus" if it occurs. I don't remember fans talking about extra practice as a major advantage of a low-level bowl bid until the past decade or so.

I think it's been seen as an advantage by the team/coaches for a long time so long as it was a lower-tier deal. I feel like someone on CF (curt?) said that even when he went, many practices were for the younger players to get reps and starters got rest.

Maybe the fans didn't really think much of it until we started seeing SO many bowls that had little value otherwise.

FWIW, the 1972 Liberty Bowl team was 5-5-1 back when there were only 8 or so Bowls.
That's sort of different, they looked really, really, good and collapsed at the end of the season.

Ended up with a losing record after the bowl.

Personally I always dislike when sub-500 teams go bowling. Its neat for the programs and the kids and I'd watch but personally, when teams under 500 go bowling - not that there needed to be another sign but its another sign that we have too many bowl games

Our selling point would be our travel history. However, I would expect a big percentage of those to skip if we’re 5-7 playing in a no name bowl and with the economy.
Help me understand the economy comment

First off, four losses by a total of 14 points, to me, is pretty incredible considering our youth. Second, this is where 'fans' define themselves. And, third, it's often spoken about that having an extra game at the end of the year is an opportunity for a whole lot more practices. So, a bowl game would be a big boon and IF the fans show up, it'll continue to support the narrative of "win or lose" Iowa State fans support their teams.

Fans define themselves? Please.

I think we will win our home games and make it 6-6 with a slight chance of 7-5 since I think we are due a shocking upset. We do seem to play OkSt better on the road than home. I'm just happy with bowl games since we didn't get many before CMC. At 5-7 you know we will be playing some 6-6 Mac school that we rip apart and bring home a Detroit auto parts trophy home. Always nice to win a bowl.

McMurphy is predicting bowls in Annapolis (at Navy’s stadium), Tampa, and the famous Detroit bowl vs the MAC champion will be filled with 5-7 teams. It would be fitting for Campbell to play Toledo as a 5-7 Iowa State on the Lions’ field I guess.
