Did you restart?

(lame HelpDesk joke)

My favorite to use lmao

One time I had to call into help desk because of some issue a long while back. I like messing with them a little because if I have to open a ticket, something is messed up that I don't have access to.

(A little ways into the conversation and explaining to him I also work in IT and would need help from yada yada type person)

Help Desk: "Did you restart?"
Me: "Yes I did that before I called you"
Help Desk: "Ok, just to verify, can you unplug the machine and plug it back in"
(Mischiveous grin comes across my face)
Me: "Sure no problem!"
(Unplugs computer)
Help Desk: "What do you see sir?"
Me: "My desktop screen"
Help Desk: "I thought you said you unplugged it?"
Me: "I did! But it's a laptop so we're gonna be on the phone a few hours chatting while this battery dies"
Help Desk: "Let me transfer you to my supervisor sir"

I know it’s a joke. But…. Restart has fixed many IT problems in the past. I’ve personally “fixed” many IT issues by just restarting.
Oh, for sure. It’s such an effective fix, that it makes the joke. So effective, and it happens so often, that all users should know to do this even before calling a HelpDesk.

A lot of times, we see people having trouble with their cache being stale (because they'll leave their computers on overnight and browsers open with 50+ tabs). I *could* tell them to clear their cache via CTRL+F5 or going up to the browser tools, but I always tell them to restart. 1. Because it's easier just to say restart instead of explain everything 2. Because their computer needs a good restart with their habits.

From what I've seen on the Teams chat, users that powered down their laptop last night didn't seem to have issues this morning. Of course VDI's had issues. It's amazing to see that stats on how long people leave their laptops running without reboots/powering down.

We’re supposed to leave ours on.

Yeah, the fix is to boot into safe mode and delete a specific file. If the device wasn't powered on, it never got the update.

Never been happier to have shut my machine completely down last night and only turned it on this morning... Seems I missed the whole hubabaloo.

Don’t know what the big deal is, CrowdStrike is antivirus software. You can’t download any viruses if the computer won’t boot. See, it works.

Seriously, how bad is it when the AV software is more disruptive and causes more damage than the viruses themselves

They just told everyone at my company that the office is closed for the day.

Not for my team, though. Some days IT Infrastructure seems like a better career choice than others
