Sheets would definitely be worth the gamble for the Cubs. They need some SERIOUS help in their rotation. If they go into the season as is they could struggle to stay in the Top 3 in the Central.

I don't think Ben Sheets is going to be the difference in the Cubs competing in the division this season. Personally, I'm less than excited about this.

Ben Sheets at 100% can certainly help, but I think that would still leave the Cubs an arm short.

Right. And when he gets hurt before Memorial Day, the Cubs will be two arms short until Labor Day. Ben Sheets has the durability of Kerry Wood and the mental makeup of Mark Prior, not a good combination.

Check your stats. Here is what Sheets did to us in 2007 & 2008.

GS - 9
ERA - 4.71
Record - 3-3
Hits - 47
Runs - 25
IP - 44

Not dominate by any means.

I think you should check your stats:

In 07 and 08, AT WRIGLEY FIELD ONLY:
2008 - 1-0 & 2 ND that resulted wins
2007 - 3-1

I'll take 4-1 and 6-1 in his 7 starts at Wrigley for the season if he suits up for the Cubs in '10.

Zambrano
Dempster
Lilly
Wells
Sheets
Marshall
Gorzelony (sp?)

That's enough arms, I would think. How many f'ing starters do you want?

Well, to compete with St. Louis, Milwaukee, and even Cincinnati this year it will take a little more quality over quantity. Lilly will be a huge question mark.

Milwaukee has no pitching past Gallardo and Wolf... Cincinnati can't hit the broad side of the barn except for Votto, Rolen, and Phillips...

Not saying the Cubs don't need an arm or two... because they do and you can never have too many good arms who can get a big league win.... and I'm not sold on Marshall being able to step in and give the Cubs a good effort night in and night out...

Lilly has been the most reliable and consistent starter on the staff since he signed in 2007. If anyone is a question mark, it isn't him. Zambrano and Dempster are bigger "question marks" than Lilly is.

and he just had shoulder surgery... Even the most minor and successful shoulder surgeries are a crap shoot because of the mental block you can have coming back.

He had Surgery on Nov. 4, and the projected return date is April. Don't try to make it sound like he got cut a few days ago. Lilly isn't the kind of guy who's going to get a mental block coming off of surgery. As scatterbrained as he is, Zambrano fits that description a lot better.

Yep... beat me to it... Shoulder surgery is shoulder surgery... if he comes back like he has been, great... but you just never know... this is the Cubs you know.

Assuming everyone is 100% and has a GREAT year then yes, it would be a good rotation... But Lilly is coming off surgery, Zambrano off a bad year, Sheets is a HUGE question mark and Wells will be scouted now and doesn't really have lights out stuff... I wouldn't call it "damn good".

He still had surgery man... You just never know with something like that... Yeah, I hope he's fine by April and 100%... surgery on a shoulder isn't easy when you throw a baseball for a living...

So the Cardinals have two good pitchers, one of whom is an injury waiting to happen, and the other coming off a career year, and it's the Cubs who have pitcing problems? Did Smoltz re-sign with St. Louis?

I'd be curious to see a list of guys who have had a shoulder surgery and came back to put up great numbers... Not calling you out, but I don't expect the list is very long. Docs seem to have the elbow much more figured out (minus that damn ulnar nerve)

I'll take a pair of Aces over three threes any day. How many teams make the series without an Ace?

-I'll trade any of the cubs pitchers today for Wainwright. In an instant.
-I'd trade any but lilly and MAYBE zambrano for Carpenter...
-Penny is no worse then Dempster and can be MUCH better if he keeps the ball down...

Oh yeah... the Cards also have one of top pitching coaches who make guys like Joel Pinero and Kyle Lohse look good... so yeah... their staff is better then the Cubs...
