The past 5 years I thought there was always a lot to be desired with the noise level of CA other than the Kansas game every year, the Baylor game a couple years ago, or when Iowa comes to town. It always bothered me when I would see someone trying to go crazy and a handful of people around that person would give them the death stare. Kinda felt like going to the library there. People get mad if you get too loud.

I'm sure come Tuesday of Dead Week at 6:00 p.m. when the Roos roll into town and there are empty seats in Cyclone Alley, people will be clamoring to take away student seats and give them to non-donors, and CF will return to normal, sadly.
Honestly, I fear this is a first game thing. People will use the excuse that they got turned away and wont show up the rest of the year because of it. I'm kinda wondering if the balcony will be 1/3 full for big time opponents like Texas and Oklahoma like it was last year. That was really sad.

No, the problem is that the chants are stupid. That's the band's fault and no one else's.

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that the chants are stupid. I was in the band for four years and rarely if ever joined in with the chants. But the fact that we can even hear the band at home where there are 50 of them and 2500 other students is the real problem.

#1 way to stop the stupid chants... Stop saying the stupid chants.

Well that won't happen, so you better move on to number 2.
Why won't it happen? As someone who was in the band, could you explain the story behind the band's chants and who was/is the person(s) who think they're a good idea?

I gotta agree with this. Even worse when the band is louder than the students for opponents like Oklahoma and Texas.

Because if the band isn't saying anything then Hilton is a graveyard. 99% of the time the band is the first to start screaming/making any noise whatsoever noise.

*edit* for the record - I hate band chants. But the fact that you can hear them is the entire reason that we need them.

I'd like to see the band vote on if they want to continue those chants.

Lots of bad transitions persist simply because they are traditions. There is pressure to continue them even though they aren't the best idea.

Just a handful of years ago, ISU was a non-factor in basketball nationally and it was much more difficult to find them on TV or online outside of the state of Iowa. In those circumstances, with a crappy team, I can see how those band chants would have been fun and harmless.

It's different today. We enter the season ranked and literally every game is available to watch on national TV, ESPN3 and a few on Cyclones.tv. Plus, we're showing up frequently in post-season play. Which the band is at too.

It bugged me when I was in college in Cyclones Alley (and others did make fun), but it's an actual, real embarrassment now. Coworkers, friends and family have all asked about the strange forces at work that make the band so obnoxious. You watch a game for any other power program and won't hear/see anything comparable.

So I have to wonder. Do those kids who volunteer their time enjoy being openly mocked so much? Do they get any say in this, like a vote on what to do, or is the tradition simply passed down year after year without a second thought?

I think it should be a serious discussion among them. If they think it's fun and get a kick out of drawing attention to themselves, positive or negative, fine. But if enough of them feel awkward/embarrassed about it, I hope they get a chance to be heard.

Seriously though, they should set up CA using 4 criteria:

1. Seniority
2. Knowledge of basketball
3. Screaming/yelling ability
4. NO ******* PHONE USAGE DURING THE GAME!!

I like this idea, can I proctor requirements 2 and 3. I also think each fan should receive an overall fan score that they must wear on the back of their shirt.

I was up in the nose bleeds and couldn't even tell what they were saying. I think it's a decent idea if they said funny/clever stuff, but they probably have to be real PC being affiliated with the college. The one my friend did make out was ultra lame, something about the ball being sticky.
