My thoughts... The Big 10 network is horrible all around.

Offensively we were not good. I am a little discouraged to not see basically any of the young receivers make an impact after hearing so much about them. A couple of them could be great red zone targets because Iowa just staked the box and begged us to throw the jump ball, but with all of the short receivers playing it is not really an option. I think adding that (maybe even to a TE???) would allow the offense some room to run.

Janz is the QB - he has a crazy good skill set but is still terribly raw at times. He by far gives the team the biggest upside but the mistakes need to be eliminated. He was so close on several deep balls that would have been game changers and has all of the tools but several times he just made bad reads in spots that he cannot.

I hope the defense keeps this up - I don't think the Iowa offense is as bad as they looked at times. George gives the team 3 very good lbs against both the pass and run. I think that Knott and Klein will have less tackles this year because there is so much more talent around them. I really think the d-line has finally a talented and deep unit that will not get pushed around and I think they still have room to get better.

It is still early into a long season, but lots of encouraging things. Now we need to take care of business next week in a game that has no business being close.

They'll probably take care of that for him. Hawk fans on Facebook are fun right now (if they're posting at all).
One of my friends just posted on facebook that she's trying to sell her tickets to the Central Michigan game. It could be unrelated to the outcome of today's game but I don't have the heart to ask her.

only had one posting, said he's glad to be a hawk fan and not live for one game a year. I made sure to mention that the only smack talk I saw all week came from hawk fans, so apparently ISU fans aren't the ones that look forward to one game

I am excited for our D-line play. Outstanding and deep (that's what she said) and they will become a talented and game changing crew as the season progresses. I think this D will give us the chance to be in any game we have left on the schedule.

A couple of fun facts on the first two games:

Excluding the intentional delay of game: 5 total penalties through 2 games. This is a veteran, disciplined team.

On 15 punt, Kirby has 11 inside the 20 and zero touchbacks.

Ugh.

ISU's offense made Iowa's defense look better than they actually are.

I have a suspicion that Jantz is a plant from the jihadic wing of Hawkeye nation.

Messingham; meet the new boss same as the old boss

Oline; embarrassing.

Jantz; if this performance doesn't warrant getting pulled what will. This looks like the same effort offensively as the Rutgers game except we had a lead.

What game did you watch? Certainly not the same one I did.

I think it was more a case of Iowa making excellent defensive scheme changes at half time that we never were able to account for and counter.

This was definitely the case. Our offense had their defense off-balance the whole first half. Then their defense had our offense off-balance the whole second. We never got sustained drives where we could set the tempo and get them back on their heels. And the couple times we got drives going, we turned the ball over (gggrrrrr).

Thank goodness the defense came to play.

WOW! Kirby gets a lot of credit, but still not nearly enough!

Other than the Jantz plant comment where am I wrong?

There was stagnant play calling.

Our running game got shut down because the Oline could not get a push or maintain their blocks.

Jantz's decision making is suspect demonstrated by that last pick he threw .

If we would have held onto the ball it would have been about 30 - 3. Hawks just looked terrible. And what was up with those throwback uniforms ... UUUUUUUUGLY!!!!!!!

None of those are what you said in your first post. Calling the O-Line "embarrassing" is ignorant at best, and totally moronic at worst. I have NEVER seen an ISU QB have as much time to throw the ball as Jantz had in the first half. They did very well pass blocking, and they ran block alright in the first half, and poorly in the second. but calling them "embarrassing" is unacceptable.

My take on the play calling: Iowa knew to shut down the zone read and screen pass. There were 2 or 3 long passes that Steele overthrew, but they were there for the taking. My guess is the threat of the screen play sets that up, but if we can't hit the receiver deep then the defense can really key in on stopping the run/short pass. Hopefully Steele completes those in the future.

Just my 2 cents from the stands.
