Your tooth itself shouldn't hurt if you've had a root canal, because the nerve should be removed so there shouldn't be any nerve endings to receive pain. Is it the tooth or the gum area? Is it possible there is an infection? And, have you had the root canal tooth crowned yet?
Yeah, the tooth was crowned shortly after the procedure in March or April.

So, just got back from the dentist. The x-ray showed a canal that wasn't sealed properly, whatever the hell that means. Anyway, the dentist says he can fix it, but my dental insurance has maxed out for 2010, so I've been given an ample supply of pain meds to get me through the rest of the year.

I had a root canal a few months ago. Now I'm having a terrible toothache in the area of that tooth. Is this bad news? I've heard if the root canal fails they yank it. Is that true?

I have had 2 root canals redone after several years. No big deal because the nerve is gone.

Could be a fun end of the year

That sucks... wonder if there is any kind of warranty on the messed up root canal procedure? You paid him well for it and he messed up, if the world was fair he'd have to fix his mistake.

Not sure if there's any way to tell if it was his mistake or not. I like the guy and he's always taken good care of me before now so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. He didn't charge me anything for today's appointment so that was nice.

From my understanding of the procedure, they cut into the back of your tooth and make a "door" into your root so they can remove the root. I would imagine that not being sealed means that the "door" was not put back into place correctly.

Our administrative person just had a bouncing baby head go through her upper four teeth which broke off up by the jaw bone. $6,000 adventure.

I hate the dentist and all the dentist stands for. Getting my wisdom teeth out while in college was pretty much my #1 worst experience in college. Dry socket is not my friend.

This whole discussion has given me the heebie jeebies.

I have very deep roots (some at over 30mm) and I've had 3 root canals.
Two gave and currently give me no problems at all.
The other one still bothers me almost 6 months later as it was so deep the surrounding tissue got very inflamed and they say it's still getting back to normal (doesn't seem like it should take that long to me).
So they are no fun. But to be fair the one I complain about I barely notice at all now. The first month after was rough with that one as that tooth was going to get used no matter how hard I tried to avoid it.

I haven't been to the dentist in quite awhile, and I've now apparently got a cavity in my lower left wisdom tooth. The inside of it started to fall out, and I'm terrified at having it repaired as I don't know what it will entail. I don't know what a cavity looks or feels like as I never had one as a kid (31 years old now). The tooth is not painful right now unless I chew food with it, pressure on it hurts but hot and cold don't seem to affect it much.

I'm really hoping that it isn't necessary to get a root canal for it. I'm hoping that it is something that can simply be filled. For those of you who had to have root canals done, what was the reason for it? What caused it to get to that point? Really hate going to the dentist, due to fear of the unknown.

You sure it's a wisdom tooth? They just extract those if there's a problem.

If you've lost parts of the tooth I'd think you'd need a root canal and crown, depends on how close to the pulp and inside of the tooth it is. Possible it'd just need a large filling though.

Never had my wisdom teeth taken out as my jaw had the room to hold them without problems. They're not impacted. The pulp may be exposed but I'm not sure.

I had a cavity with my upper wisdom tooth, it had fully broken through and wasn't affecting any other teeth, but my dentist said just pull it rather than let it pose future issues.
