just wrestling.

who cares.

Yeah, it's only the sport in which the state of Iowa shines. Now that Iowa football completely dropped off the national picture, in what other sport will either school gain recognition in?

Also, I agree that naming it after Gable is a bit strange. I understand that he's an influential figure for wrestling in the state of Iowa, and that he is associated with both schools, but he IS associated with one school more than the other, IMO. But if the two programs agreed on it, I'll defer to them.

Very respectful comment relative to Les Anderson - I myself would have liked to have seen a Gable/Nichols travelling trophy - I am sure both schools would have agreed. Most people associated to wrestling, associate Gable to Iowa (not a problem), but the dual sponsorship would have focused on coaching, with respect given to each -as coaches.

This would have been a great idea. People associate Gable with Iowa, not ISU. Gable himself does also, or he wouldn't have felt "guilty" about the trophy's name, questioning why ISU would agree to it.
A "Gable-Nichols" trophy would have been perfect.

Well yeah, he's been working for them for decades. But watch any other meet and he's pulling for ISU. That's more or less my point: He does have a history with ISU, and he didn't jilt us like Cael did, but in the eyes of the world he's a Hawkeye, so they probably could have come up with a better name.

If Gable and Cael both came back for some award ceremony, Gable would get cheered, Cael would get booed.

You don't think that the trophy would help explain to the world that he IS a Cyclone? I like the trophy and it's more that just about Dan Gable; it's about keeping our wrestling tradition strong here in Iowa.

Dan Gable is a Cyclone and a Hawkeye. You can't ignore his acheivements at ISU. The idea that "we'll never have it" is bull****. The national championship should run through Iowa City or Ames every year. We (ISU) just need to improve our program. I know we tried with Cael and he ****ed us but that's not an excuse to cry about it. If ISU is satisfied with a medeocre wrestling program it's time to kill it.

Where you coached or wrestled doesn't determine whether or not you are a tool.

Gable is a tool.

If we wrestled Penn State every year would you be okay with a Cael Sanderson traveling trophy? I think Cael has more respect for ISU than Gable does but I wouldn't want his name on the trophy.

I don't really care if he's a tool, I'm not saying he's not. He's a wrestling icon and he wrestled for ISU and coached for Iowa. Again, Gable is simply a way to link two college wrestling programs in Iowa and promote the sport.

I'm not sure how you could say Cael has more respect for ISU than Gable. ISU explicitly guided our program to give it to Cael. We overpaid him for his experience level and we did it as an investment all the while being clear that we wanted Cael to be our future...then he bolted. I don't see a lot of respect there. If Gable has ever said disparaging things about ISU (has he ever?) that's one thing but Cael's actions hurt ISU wrestling, imo.

1. Why does Cael have more respect for ISU than Gable? Personally, I think the opposite is much, much more true.

2. Why is Dan Gable a "tool"?

Hold on there turbo... we have a few underachieving seasons and we are on our way to killing the program? Glad you aren't the AD. We would be better this year but we are redshirting some surefire starters that will only make our team better next year. We are still transitioning from losing our figurehead of a coach. Wait a little bit before you pass judgement.

After watching the UNI/Iowa wrestling meet last night and listening to the commentary. The announcers are talking of the wrestling roots and Jim Gibbons states he is a Cylcone and states to Dan Gable, your a Cyclone - Dan very strongly stated "No I'm not!". After about 5 seconds of silence he quickly backtrackes hihs position and states he's a Cylone and a Panther. I firmly believe Dan did a tremendous job at Iowa - but come on. I lost a little bit of respect for him - I sure he really care.

Let me help you understand . . I saw him wrestle at ISU with all the team/individual glory that followed. He left in a huff . . went to Iowa and has never looked back.

He is not a Cyclone and frankly . . I don't care. My Iowa friend gave me a book signed by Gable. That book was tossed into the trash later on. I have as much respect for him as he does ISU.

Just can't believe ISU went along with this. Gable is a Hawk. What's next, do we play for the Hayden Fry Trophy for football, or the Lute Olson Trophy for basketball?
Even Gable himself is questioning it:

"I just didn’t think Iowa State would agree with that,†Gable said after his old program — the Hawkeyes — beat his alma mater in a dual for the seventh straight time. “That was my first thought, because I’ve been away from them for quite a while and because you’re a Hawkeye, there’s a lot of rivalry there.â€

Is tornado man serious? Does he not know WHO Dan Gable is and what is history is? Does he not know that Dan Gable was a 3 time All American and 2 time NCAA champion? Does he not know that Dan Gable was a graduate assistant coach during the 1971 1972 Iowa State Cyclone NCAA Championship wrestling team? Ask Ben Peterson, Carl Adams, Jason Smith, and all the other NCAA champions for ISU about Dan's influence on them and how he helped them win individual championships.

Tornado man ought to engage mind before opening mouth. Or in this case typing on keyboard. There was no room for Dan Gable as the Cyclone coach. Harlold Nichols was the Head coach and continued until 1985 and Les Anderson the head assistant was the heir apparent. In fact, if Tornado man would check out before striking out he would know that Les Anderson finally left because he saw that he would not get a shot at the head coaching job.

So, Dan Gable the fabled ISU wrestler had not choice but to go elsewhere. Thank You Dan Gable for staying in IOWA and going to U of I!!!

Dan Gable is and always will be a huge part of Cyclone Wrestling and despite the single loss still in most people's minds the greatest Cyclone wrestler of all times. You know it is not 100% the win loss record.

As for Tornado man's comments about Hayden Fry and Lute Olson. Well they speak for themselves. And as for Dan's questioning it, well I can only say, Dan is one of the most grounded and humble human beings you will ever know and I think if you asked him he was equally surprised that Iowa was honoring him. Or maybe Dan has just seen too many miss guided fans like Tornado man and wrongly thinks that real CYCLONE fans might actually agree.

Tornado man how Freudian is that? A bunch of HOT AIR that spins aimlessy causing no good and only destroys.

Merry Christmas and THANK YOU Dan Gable for all that you have done for ISU, U of I, the state of Iowa, the Nation, all of wrestling and thank you for making the lives of thousands better. Go Hawks and Go Cyclones!

you don't know what you are talking about. He did not leave in a huff and he has often looked back and I bet if you could look it up you would find that Dan has supported the ISU program for years in many ways and will continue to.

Another great name here Madclone1. ought to expand to MADCLONE disease. why do you have to rip? why not just understand that there was no room for Dan in the coaching ranks at ISU when he graduated? Dan even stayed a year and helped coach and train and was a key part of the 1971 72 NCAA championship team.

Maybe why the state is far more supportive of IOWA then ISU. Fans like you cause me to re think my support of ISU, but then I realize the issue is YOU and fans like YOU not ISU!

cyputz great comment and very interesting. No reason the trophy could not have been named Nichols-Gable trophy. Probably just not thought of and since I am sure the idea originated in IOWA CITY Dr Nichols probably just didn't get entered into the equation. I know Dan hold Dr Nichols, Les Anderson and Bob Siddens has huge influencers in his life.

Interesting had ISU thought about honoring one of their greatest alums maybe they could have come up with the name.

who ever said that other then when ISU goes against IOWA Dan is 100% ISU, I believe that to be true.

Go HAWKS and Go CYCLONES and go away all you wimpering little wanna be babys. Get a life and get behind your team and quit thinking by tearing down the HAWKS you are building up the CYCLONES!

Well . . then, there is a LOT of MADCLONE disease in our fanbase. Wanna know why? ISU loses to Iowa YEAR in and OUT . . by 2-4 bouts. Waiting until next year is a LOSING attitude. Win this year and COMPETE without all the excuses, injuries, and "ramping up" for the National tourney.

At this rate . . ISU is exactly where it should be . . a twenties something program. PSU, OSU, Iowa . . and a host of other schools are leaving ISU in the dust. Live, own it, and deal with it.

And an Adam Haluska Trophy to round out the trifecta.

Would you stick around with fans like you? I love ISU but have to tell you as hard as it was go to IOWA when I did for my major I learned to like it and could not believe the huge up tick in positive fans and the over all lack of blaming "the other school" all the time.

Be proud of the Cardinal and Gold and support them win or lose for the long haul and you will be surprised maybe some day when you are out of the state and are asked where you are from and when you say IOWA the automatic answer will be "oh home of the Cyclones"! Doesn't happen now, man, and you and your negative cohorts may just be part of the problem!
