Well $10 Billion a month to a war we shouldn't have started didn't really help our debt out either.

I don't know if that number is accurate for the costs of fighting the war, but if we assume it is, then you are looking at $120B for a year. $120B would represent 0.92% percent of a $13T federal debt. For someone who doesn't support the war it is quite easy to look at that cost and say why not just stop it and bring everyone home, but when you compare it to the numbers for the federal debt of even the annual budget, it is sadly just a tiny little drop in the bucket.

The cuts that are going to need to be made to get this under control will be deep and painful. You can campaign to bring the troops home or cut back NASA or whatever else doesn't impact your day to day life, but at then end of the day the cuts that will have to be made are cuts that each and every one of us will feel, and that is why nobody in Washington has the stones to stand up and do it.

Net National Debt 8.5 trillion

So what's your plan to get us out of this?
I have one, btw, but you first.

Raise eligibility standards on social security and medicare.

Discontinue all divisions of government which are not mandated as (federal) government powers by the Constitution.

Peg federal worker pay and benefits to levels consistent with similar private sector jobs.

Reward government workers for efficiency in both service and spending (well run + under budget= bonus).

Take a serious look at defense spending, and if money is spent to protect other nations, send them at least a significant portion of the bill.

Repeal the 16th amendment and enact a consumption tax (Fairtax) that doesn't allow politicians to pay back campaign contributors through the tax code.

Repeal the 17th amendment, and return senators to state control rather than election by the popular vote.

That's a start:wink:

Can we just file bankruptcy, start a new country or maybe United States LLC and run the debt up to 13 trillion again?
