We have a deck that is a POS that came with the house and needs to be removed. A couple of questions.

#1 What's the best way to dispose of the wood(stained). It's junk and wouldn't be use to anyone. I don't have a truck to haul it anywhere.

#2 We're going to have a patio (pavers) put in. How do I go about removing the footings and how deep?

Rent a roll away trash dumpster. Size dependent on deck size and if you have other stuff to throw away

I need to build a new deck myself and am faced with the same dilemma. Current code in Omaha for footings is 42 inches below grade. I did a quick search and in Johnson the current code is also 42 inches. So I would guess if your current deck was built to code those footings are going to be pretty deep.

So just leave them in and cut off at ground level?

If you can do pavers over the old footings I would think that would work. They might need to chop out some of the old concrete footings in order to get the base down for the pavers unless this patio is going to be slightly elevated.

But I'm certainly no expert on the subject.

You can rent what I think they called a wrecking hammer at most rental centers. I got one at Home Depot for like $60 for 4 hours when I was busting out the old concrete stoop while building my deck.

Easy money for that type of work. Beat the daylights out of using the sledgehammer

May be worth the effort to do a bit of probing as see if they footings go down all that far. If the deck is really junk, they may have cut a few corners on the footings as well.

Regardless - IYou'd probably want to go down a bit lower than where you're going to start your base for the pavers just so you have a nice even surface. I'd think the only real issue would be if they didn't do the footings to code, and they end up having some frost heave issues in which case they'd start pushing on your pavers. But otherwise, I don't know what else could happen.

As for disposal - there's the Metro Waste green bags if it's not a large deck. I did a quick check when I did my deck and it seemed to me that the price was rather steep (I do have a truck, so...). Flexible though

honestly, put the wood on craigslist for free - someone will take it

when we redid our deck last summer, my neighbor had a buddy who took most of it even though it was crap

the rest we cut down to 3-4 foot chunks and bundled with twine. put it out with your regular trash

If it is free, no one will want it. Put it by the curb with a sign that says $25 for the whole pile. Someone will steal it.

This is the answer, pretty reasonable usually. They deliver and pick up. Cut up with a chainsaw, watch out for screws and nails as they will ruin a chainsaw blade quickly.

My neighbor rented one once and stopped by my house one evening to tell me if I had anything to toss to go ahead and toss it in as he was finished and there was plenty of room left. Score !!!

Good way to get rid of those pesky dead hookers in the basement.

Put it on your curb and put an add on craigslist for free. I had a bunch of chunks of sod, not nice pieces of sod and used this method. Some dirtball in a minivan picked it all up and didnt even use a tarp beneath the sod.
