Defensive Coordinator Possibilities?

Toledo had the #51 ranked defense in yards/game. That is against the #86 schedule strength. Not that impressive. Also, Heacock is not popular. Campbell is going overboard in nepotism - and he will pay the price when he goes up against the Big12. You can't move the Toledo Rockets to the Big12 and succeed. That's what we're trying to do.

Toledo had orob the top D in the Mac the last couple years. And I'd take the #51 defense any day here. Granted the comp wasn't as good. So did you expect a 35 year old coach to go out and just hire a bunch of guys he's never worked with before and has no clue if they can develop and coach players the way he wants to?

Worked with Rhoads and Klanakis....oh wait

LOL. Toledo was undefeated against Power 5 Conference teams last year. They had a good team and a good staff. Our defense was not good last year. Toledo improved in about every category last year. Including takeaways which is an area we definitely need to improve upon.

Heacock has loads of experience. If Campbell wants to have Heacock as his DC, then I am okay with it. I am more interested in results than in popularity at this point.

This is the first thing that I've read since the hire that makes me depressed. Thanks a lot.

This. Plus, these guys are going to be able to recruit at a higher level here. Not the top spot in the conference, but not a perpetual bottom-dweller either.

That's just silly. Is he also trying to recruit like he did with Toledo, or is he going to shoot for a better quality of player with the enhanced profile of his new school? Of course it's the latter. Coaching is coaching, and football is football. The difference between levels is in the average quality of player.

Looks like Jon Heacock is our DC. Especially with the picture on Jack Trice scoreboard.

Can't find a OC post...but has any heard if Sturdy has actually Left? Honestly I could see him being QB coach or possibly Co-OC. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. First the offense generally got better under him and we wouldn't have to re learn an entirely new offense with all new calls and playbook. If we bring in an entirely new Oc with a whole new system there bound to be a big learning curve and I'm not sure this program can afford that given the expectations of getting to a bowl next year.

I would honestly love this move. I know that would mean 2 former assistants from last years staff would still be here but I think Sturdy is a heck of a coach and he brings a lot of energy, which I know the players love.

In our league, defense is secondary to offense, regardless of what any old saying says. If Campbell's offense is successful, his defense will be too, regardless of who is coaching.

Part of me also thinks that maybe Campbell would want to run the offense himself. He was an OC in the past, which led to him being a HC.

Get me a decent offense, and I will improve the defense.

He's not moving the Toledo Rockets to the Big 12. He's moving most of his staff to a Big 12 school where they will have more money, better facilities, better recruiting opportunities, more exposure and increased fan support. Otherwise developing players and making good coaching decisions is pretty similar whether you're coaching in the Mac or Big 12.

I trust that Coach Campbell's staff has taken the time to look at the offenses that are in the Big 12. I will admit that it does make me somewhat nervous to see us extending a scholarship to guys that only have MAC or lower offers. I don't care how great these guys are. MAC players will not win games in the BIG 12. JMO.

Yeah, because hiring former assistants never happens...

Totally agree with you here. Some of the best win at multiple levels before they reach the top. The ones that adapt and take advantage of better situations (moving from Toledo to Iowa State) will succeed. The ones that don't will be the OC and DC at programs for life.

Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Thomas Rawls, and many others would lead me to believe you could be wrong.

Don't be such a simpleton by judging the hire on 1 year of raw stats. That is a horrible way to assess the ability of Heacock to succeed here.

In our league, defense is secondary to offense, regardless of what any old saying says. If Campbell's offense is successful, his defense will be too, regardless of who is coaching.
It is? How many of the teams at the top have poor defenses? It is not secondary, it is relative. The correlation of the teams at the top of the conference having the better defenses is not any different than any other conference, just the stats are.

You didn't watch those games, did you? God damn you are a box score guy. Let's hope Campbell's staff gets ISU to play a lot better than Toledo did in those games. Toledo lucked out that Arkansas and ISU out-stumbled them. Toledo did not go on to dominate in the MAC- a pretty overrated team in terms of quality of play imo. Good record though.

He hasn't left yet. I think he has another meeting with Campbell this week. I could see a Co-OC position with Coach Ayeni as running game coordinator.
