I have called this numerous times in High School. But many high school officials don't. I think its a big advantage especially if the team presses. It's a rule so just enforce it. I see players tip the ball once its thru the basket. They get a warning for delay of game. Then next time of any delay of game is a technical. Like breaking the plane of the end line or side line. Officials get paid to do there job. So just enforce the rules of the game.

i was very young but I thought danny manning was warned to stop catching the ball after it went thru the basket and he continued to do it. I believe he was given a technical and it was his 5th foul. I think ISU won the game in hilton I was probably 5 and listening on the radio.

I have no idea if any of that is true except that I know he lost.

Watching the Iowa/Indiana game. Biefeldt just made a basket, grabbed the basketball and threw it to the official on the baseline about 20 feet away.

Just. Like. West Virginia. Every time they make a basket. Ref warned Indiana for delay of game. So is that, like, a rule? Because even though WVU annoys the sheet out of me when they do it, I assumed it is legal. No?

Any my rules experts out there?

Anyone who thinks it is not an advantage to make the ball bounce one or two times more or keeping the ball away from the inbounding player doesn't help stop a fast break is wrong. Illegal? Maybe? I would coach it until they made me quit. 1/2 a second is a lot of time on a fast break.

True. And Dr. Tom's famed full-court press was almost predicated on the person guarding the inbounder stepping over the line and getting away with it.

This is so very true. Unfortunately my most vivid memories of Chris Street were of him practically jumping on the man inbounding the ball because he would jump so far across the line and reach even further across the line. It is too bad that most of the memories I have of a passed great player are of him regularly breaking the rules.

Remember when Bobby Knight instructed his players to spike the ball off their noses if they crossed the line? Hawk fans went insane about this horrible act of sportsmanship by the Hoosiers. Everyone else just thought it was funny.

I had never heard of this but that just makes me love Bobby even more.

jakob jakes one of the most obnoxious players in hawkeye history took an inbounds pass off the face so hard it bounced off his face 20 rows deep into the student section and the fans at Indiana exploded with applause. Double over head pass right off his nose. lol Who names their kid Jake Jakes anyway.

WV is the worst at this. not only do they tip it away then throw to the ref. They will let the ball intentionally bounce off of their leg or shoulder after it goes through the net so it bounces away from the other team. Probably saw 10-15 instances of this in the Iowa State game in Morgantown. Refs didn't even think about warning them.
