So did/does ISU really have a depth problem?

There have been the questions about Ashton or even Carter getting more minutes for quite a while from the fan base.

Any theories as to why these guys haven't been getting time?

It just proves that if we had Naz we'd be fine. Ashton wouldn't have played in this game if Naz is healthy with the Cooke situation being the same.
You and your "injury problem". And if we had magically signed Diallo and SDW not transferred we would not have a depth problem either.

But Naz is out (and it was known since last spring that outcome was possible) and we still would be short in the post. We have a depth problem. The impact of this problem has been made worse with already weak defenders being allowed to use it as an excuse to stay on the court despite bad defense and rebounding.

Oh, and Ashton should have been in the rotation prior to today.

Ashton hasn't played in a lot of games after Long's decision though. Doesn't matter at the end of the day. It's great that Ashton contributed in the first half. Hoping for more.

No we have an injury problem.

The depth "issue" was talked about well before Naz exiting the rotation. It doesn't change the fact that it seems we have had at least one guy sitting on the bench who obviously can contribute (I think most of us knew this before this game) while starters are playing 35+ minutes, are winded, and scared to foul.

I bet you're a real treat at dinner parties. Dear lord. We beat a team by double digits on the road in the big 12. Be happy.

Ashton has active hands in that zone and hustles hard. Our zone was better at times with Ashton up top than Thomas up top. Not saying Ashton is better than MT but MT looked more comfy in that zone as the SF on wing.

What I liked about JA play is toward end he got passed a long pass and could have forced a layup but brought it back out. Zero reason he shouldn't be getting minutes.

If Ashton looked this well and didnt get any minutes until now, Id like to see what Carter can do. Would love for him to be the guy who burns a few of Niangs minutes per game.

Small sample size, but Carter's defense away from the hope was absolutely awful against Coppin State. If that is representative of anything he absolutely can't be in guarding a post who can take him away from the rim. With that said I wonder how he'd do guarding a post who doesn't have a jump shot, or if nothing else get him in for a couple minutes when we go zone.

Ashton played well today. I'd like to see how his defense is in man. If it's decent at all, and if fatigue has been an issue, then he should be getting a few minutes each game if not more. I'm really not sure whether or not fatigue has been an issue, but if it has there is no reason they can't get Ashton in there for a few spot minutes now and then. Today he was a more productive player than Burton, IMO.

Ashton was brought in by Hoiberg as an insurance policy if either Cooke or Naz couldn't go. He didn't light the world on fire but he looked like a damn good insurance policy to me.
