I was trying to think up comps for Nevada's players.

after watching a bunch of tape, it's clear there are two sets. Marshall, Caroline and Oliver make them go, and King, Fenner and Hall are "just guys". They do their job, they can all handle, drive and shoot the 3, but those 3 don't stand out.

Marshall reminded me a lot of Devonte Graham at Kansas - if he was the main scorer at a mid-major. I can't decide if that's too high of praise or not. He mainly plays off the ball, scores kinda quietly, but moves over to the main handler late in the games and takes (and makes) the big shots. I just looked up the advanced stats and they are almost identical from shooting percentages to physical size to assist rate. The only major difference is usage %.

Oliver was tricky, but I decided his best comparison is Deonte Burton stretched 4" taller and down about 10 pounds. They really do play similarly. Shoot 3's, drive to the rim, putbacks. With a real mission to punish the rim with highlight dunks. Oliver rebounds a bit better (15% vs. 12%) and blocks more shots, but Burton has more steals. Burton shoots less 3s and more 2s, Oliver doesn't love the mid-range like Deonte. Shooting percentages and passing are very similar. It'll be fun to watch them guard each other when ISU goes small

Caroline is a harder comp for me. Can shoot the 3, very good at offensive rebounding for being slightly undersized, but his main strength is putting his head down going to the rim and getting fouled. He's made 30 more FTs than anyone on ISU has attempted - and he only makes 58%! Looking through the stats I figured out who he plays like - Aaron White! But, you know, without out all the pasty Iowa-ness. And White was two inches taller and could actually make his FTs, and Caroline is a bit better rebounder.

FWIW, I caught LE's radio show before the CSU/Pack game in Reno last week. Larry basically said that Marshall and Oliver are good enough to get their points no matter what you did, but the key to beating them is to not let Caroline go off. Praised his work on the glass, D, hustle, 50/50 balls, can score etc... Said if you let all 3 go off they are very difficult to beat.

Should be a great game to watch. Just a hunch, but I think the winner will win at least two more games.

Go Clones!

Oliver should be the best athlete on the floor

He definitely is above average in athleticism but Burton looks at least as athletic as this guy:

Then some of these wouldn't count as super athletic but still good. Mind you he's only 6'4" or 6'5" and still able to post up (probably since he has a 7'1" wingspan):

As long as we don't go completely ice cold shooting, I think we prevail in this one by being the better defensive team. I think steals are going to be there for us to capitalize upon.

Oliver is going to get his points down low. He has a really quick first step and as long as he doesn't let a double team come, he's faster than any big that we have.

The good news is that we've played against good bigs and will likely limit his touches as much as we can. Plus, Thomas and Burton have been really really good at stripping the ball from opposing posts and frustrating them.

Foul trouble is a big wild card, but I feel much more confident with how Bowie, Babb and Holden have bought into their roles lately. Even if Young or Burton go to the bench early, other guys have proven their ability to step up and keep the game flowing. For me, that's been the most comforting result of these past 12 games.

The 'who is the better athlete Burton or Oliver?' question is impossible to answer. They are very very similar - both are freak physical specimens. Burton is thicker and stronger, he outweighs Oliver by 10-20lbs while giving up 3-4". From game film they are roughly equivalent leapers. Oliver might be a bit quicker, but that's hard to judge. For being such unique players, they are amazingly alike.

Thanks, honesty though I haven't seen much but solid basketball discussion, and I love it. Sure there are a few knuckleheads, but every fan base has those. Just hope ours don't make there way over here.

What impresses me most about Nevada is their coach Eric Musselman. Not sure how you guys ever landed him but he's got one helluva resume. Nevada's destiny is to become one of the most dangerous teams in America if he stays.

Thanks an yes he is really turning us into a mid major power , but he is rumored to be LSUs top prospect , Next year could be special we have the Martin twins from NCst transferring in with Kendall Stephens from Purdue an Halice Cooke. Did Halice Cooke ever get game action for you guys?

Halice Cooke not so much. I don't know the whole story but mostly medical at the time.

He was a reserve guard that struggled to solidify his role. He was a good shooter and passer, but a little weak with the ball. He lost his confidence during conference play, but was playing better at the end of the season. If healthy, he could be a solid starter on a MWC team.

Once again, sounds a lot like Oklahoma State. We beat them three times, but all were battles. I'm hoping to see some quick, early missed threes from Nevada that lead to runouts for ISU. West Virginia was taking some bad shots to get back in it, and it only helped us extend the lead. Of course, if Nevada is hitting those early, it could get scary. I'm starting to feel confident, and that's scary in itself.

This is exactly where I'm at and I have no idea how to handle it.

He looks like a big strong dude. I'm struggling to find a lot of highlights against top 50 RPI teams this year though. I won't doubt he looks like a great athlete, but it's easier to show off your athleticism against San Jose State, UNLV, and Air Force.

Sports Reference has a search query that allows you to select 4 categories, then the statistical number. So I selected 3 pt fg made, Pts, Rebs, and Blks. Then put in a number slightly lower than Oliver's from this season in each.

I originally only searched back to 2005. However, that yielded ZERO other players, so I went back to 1992, which is the earliest the site allows you, and then I got one other player, Shane Battier. Long story short, the dude's a freak.

Pretty fun little tool.

That's funny, I put in Monte Morris assists and turnovers and I think I broke the computer.

Just saying, we have a unique player too. I'm not saying Nevada shouldn't be respected, but we may be blowing things a little out of perspective. We are favored for a reason.

Yeah, I put in Monte's ast, pts, Rebs, and 3s and only like 12 others.

His assists and turnovers are insane, but they're still only two categories, and don't tell the whole story.
