I suppose some elements come down to what you think the Iowa fanbase would do with a new face and if they started winning again. Are they just completely checked out on Iowa basketball now? Have they missed developing a "new generation" of Hawkeye basketball fans with Fran's boring mediocrity?

Or are they desperate for a winner and, once they start winning, CHA is going to fill up (much as it did with the Clarkies) and Iowa basketball could be dangerous going forward? They've been very good in the now distant past, and TJ and McD have shown you can build winning programs just down the road.

I honestly don't know, but I would guess more "sleeping giant" than "dead in the ditch." You could say something similar about a number of Big Ten schools with basketball, though, like Minnesota.
Hawk fans are bandwagoners they'll be on that train as soon as it's winning.
When Iowa women lost those 5 straight this yr they were all fire Jensen now after 2 or 3 straight wins they've calmed back down

I think this is spot on. While there likely is mutual interest between EIU and Devries, it just doesn't make financial sense to make the move after this season. EIU would be better off waiting a couple of years for the buyouts to lower and it would give EIU some more time to evaluate if Devries is the person they want to take over.

IMO Iowa's and Devires biggest issue is probably NIL. WV has spent a lot of money on this years team and Iowa hasn't shown they are close to that kind of commitment.

EIU has made decent NIL commitments to WBB and football, I wonder if the people that have money are not willing to make that same investment as long as Fran is in charge, and getting a new coach like DeVries would change that equation. DeVries would be silly to take the job without NIL moneys being increased over their current levels.

Honestly, Iowa burning money on WBB is a pretty good reason to not take the Iowa MBB job. Iowa has the same NIL challenges Iowa State does and SWARM is always going to be football heavy.

And Wrestling. Saw somewhere a kid got $5 million to go there, unless that was fake.

I respect WVU as a program but I honestly don’t get why Devries went there. Feel like he could have gotten a better job or if he really wanted the Iowa job just stay at Drake till Fran is out which looks soon. Regardless idk if Devries stays at WVU for the long run. He’s a great coach better programs will come calling or if he wants to be at Iowa that’ll be an option eventually.
Well, it was the next step up for him from Drake...actually probably two steps as the Big 12 in Basketball is near if not the top league. Have success there and you can name your school if that is your desire. I still get the idea that he talked with Iowa prior to WV and Iowa simply wasn't ready to move on from Fran. Plus, basketball-wise...is Iowa a step up from WV?

You are thinking like the money comes from the same pool of people giving it. It really does not, some people want to support only one sport and maybe not another. EIU WBB program gained a lot of support and popularity during the Clark years, that money is not going to continue to keep rolling in, unless they can stay at that level, which is not going to happen. From everything I have seen ISU is like most schools and the vast amount of money is going into football and MBB, no reason EIU would be any different with a new coach.

@buf87 any truth to this?
Rumor is Bo Bassett (#1 recruit in 2026 Class) got $5 million for 4 years to go to Iowa.
Jax Forrest (#2) & Ross from Fort Dodge( #3) kids in Class of 2026 is rumored to be $3 million for 4 years to go to Ok State.

Those are the numbers being thrown around

Iowa wrestling is being funded by Bob Nicolls
Ok State wrestling is being funded by the Paycom guy

Well you guys are holding up really well when you hear of these types of numbers being thrown around. Those seem like crazy numbers to me.

We are struggling to keep up. Wrestling will get none of the University money. Everything will have to come from the Cardinal & Gold Wrestling Collective and drinking more of West O Blood Round Beer. Blood Round beer is the wrestling beer similar to the Ames Lager being the We Will beer.

the once bright glow on devries is fading. not sure wvu make a strong pitch to keep him given this late season swoon. you need depth in the big 12, and losing 2 of his 3 playmakers has exposed his roster.
He also should have signed a true post player in the portal.

Wow that's wild, I had no idea there was that much money in NCAA wrestling.
