I hesitate to bring this up, I saw the kid play three games on TV, I'm not a basketball analyst, or a coach. This opinion only!!!. Diante Garrett is not Lawson, Augustin, or Collins, I don't think we can count on him to take over the PG and lead us to the promised land. Garrett is a really good athlete, and a good basketball player as well. He is just not a PG, and I'm not doing a very good job of explaining why. Something about the way he drives the lane, and the shots he ended up taking don't resemble the game shown by the above three. Maybe that is why GMac recruited Brister?

You don't have to resemble Lawson, Augustin, or Collins to be good or even an effective PG.

Of course he's not going to take over right away. This is why he'll most likely redshirt his first season, we already have a 3-man backcourt rotation with Mike, Corey and Dodie. Brister will probably join that group next year and Boozer will redshirt also.

Then when Corey and Mike are gone, it will be Brister(SO), Dodie (JR) and Garett(RS FR) and Boozer(RS FR), a very talented and effective 4-man backcourt if you ask me.

Did you expect him to look like Lawson, Augustin, or Collins? He is still in high school. Like it was said earlier, he will be more effective when under the coaching of GMac.

As more info about him has started to come out, it sounds like he won't be the PG of the future anyway, it sounds like that will be Buckley. So this doesn't shock me.

He won't look like Lawson, Augustin or Collins anyway, they were all 5-star recruits who are All-American potential basketball players.

We may need Garrett to play like them to be a top 4 seed, but no one is expecting that anyway...

I appreciate the report. With the way McIntosh played down the stretch we wouldn't be in shambles if he had to start the majority of the games IMO. Add a summer of working out and coaching he will be OK if Diante isnt ready.

It's tough to look as good as Augustine, he's a future NBA star.

Apparently Dominique Buckley is going to take over the point when he shows up so I guess its just a stopgap year at that position. He, Garrett, Staiger, and Brackins should make up an impressive lineup at ISU for years to come.

McDermott has said that Garrett will contribute right away...so he definately isn't going to redshirt. I have also heard that Buckley is more of a true point guard, and Garrett is more of a slasher, get to the bucket type guard. I don't like to say what a player will or will not be able to do though, before he has stepped foot on the court in a division one game, that is how unrealistic and unfair expectations and comparisons get made.

Give it some time, remember how much things changed from you between the time you were 17 and 19 or 20. We will see big things from these young guys coming in.

Garrett is a really good athlete, and a good basketball player as well. He is just not a PG, and I'm not doing a very good job of explaining why.

Not a PG??? He is the highest rated point guard in the state of Wisconsin. He rarely turns the ball over, has great court vision, can drive and dish, makes great passes, and gets up over people in the lane. His snap passes are like bullets. What more do you want in a PG? I've seen Garrett play seven times in the past year and I am totally impressed by him. His defense is nothing to sneeze at either. He completely dominated highly touted MSU recruit Korie Lucious and really shut him down. He also schooled Dwight Buycks. Just because he is not 200+ pounds, doesn't mean he can't play. BTW, what does Wesley Johnson weigh?

I've also seen Buckley play this season. Dominique is also an outstanding PG, but nobody will mistake him for Shaquille O'Neal on the court. Diante and Dominique have the potential to be a great backcourt duo. Won't it be great to have two guards who take care of the ball. Contrast that to what we saw this year in the backcourt.

As far as Brister, he needs to shed some pounds and improve his shooting. His strength is that he protects the ball and doesn't turn it over. IMO, his upside is potential is nowhere near Diante's.

Mark my words, Diante will not redshirt and he will contribute greatly at the PG position next year, even if he isn't the starter. :yes4lo:

I just think it's exciting to think that we could have Jiri/Alex, Brackins, W. Johnson, Taylor, and Garrett on the floor all at once. I don't know how you can make room for everyone to include Rahshon Clark and others. As long as we can improve our shooting we can be a good team next year.

I totally agree with cstrunk. We will definitely be a team that people don't want to play next year. We will have skilled players at every position on the floor. We basically have our whole team back with experience under the McDermott system. These players now know what it takes and can only improve in the off season. I expect them to make a run and get into the NCAA tourney next year.
Garrett will definitely help at the point. This will allow Mike Taylor to play his more natural position at the 2. With MT coming off set screens and plays, this will open up the floor for more back doors, Etc. I'm pumped for next year already. I see our team having a huge turnaround. --TA

Well I love your optimism, but we've got a long ways to go. Yeah we have a lot of talent coming, but they'll all be new and green. We've got some good players coming back and Alex Thompsen will be in the mix. Yes we should be better and we may aproach 20 wins next season, but I wouldn't expect more then that quite yet.

Bobber,

This year I thought our defense was adequate and good enough to get good wins. Our offense was the problem. Jiri didn't turn it on until nearly halfway through the season. Wesley Johnson was a freshman, and Mike Taylor was a new juco. Throw in Alex Thompson, a healthy Ross Marsden, a 5 star power forward, playing experience and experience under a new coach and I think we will be pleasantly surprised next year.
Not to mention, we had 2 starters playing out of position. Wesley Johnson should be playing the 3 and Mike Taylor should only be playing the 2.
