That’s actually probably a smarter way to tax vehicles/road use anyway. It‘s just too complicated to do now.
True, more efficient. But it just feels so big brothery... tech like this with the wrong kind of ppl (left or right) in charge makes it easier to create a police state. China is pioneering this.

It's bad enough what it costs me to register my vehicle in Nebraska, I don't want to add an additional $240 a year on top.

I believe the main use is for fleets. If you have a large fleet, this maybe worth it so the tags are always up-to-date. There is no reason for an average joe to get this.

I guess this is seen as a benefit to those who only drive a few thousand miles annually. So perhaps the old lady who only drives to church once a week shouldn't get taxed the same as someone who has an hour commute every day?
Then I shouldn’t be taxed for school funding since I have no kids. It’s a slippery slope

But in the current ICE dynamic you are paying road tax based on the amount gasoline you use. With electric vehicles, that can be replaced by a flat registration tax or a use tax via milage with a tracking system. Personally, I don't care either way as long as it is consistent between ICE and electric. What we have today is not.

Furthermore, going forward you may see states work to recoup taxes based on where the vehicle is driven rather than where it is registered. So people commuting over state borders could pay taxes for where they drive and not necessarily where they live.

There are a lot of possibilities for this and not all of them are bad. But I'm not sure why you'd have to tie it to a license plate. Seems it could be cheaper to add it anywhere else in the car.
