In an age when coaches are shown the door in 3-4 years, Fred has got to be one of the most secure coaches in the profession. Why leave? His family is young. The twins are what? 8, 9 or 10? I would guess there isn't a real desire to run off to coach an NBA team - family in tow - only to potentially lose that job in 3 years and then pack up the family again. Think about the NBA too, you are only as good as your roster and then not even that good sometimes. Special NBA teams require a couple stars and alot of guys that buy into their role. The current state of the NBA seems to be heading toward less stable teams than more. It's a broken league because you can't keep continuity for very long. Thus, coaches last about as long as the star or roster dictates. Yes, Fred has ties to alot of NBA teams. He is gaining a very positive upward trending reputation in the college ranks as someone that knows how to exploit mismatches. I am really excited about the prospect of THE best shooters in high school giving us a look moving forward. I rarely defer to hyperbole in regards to Iowa State athletics - but Fred's approach could take Iowa State to unseen heights. Add longevity into that equation and we could be a real power in college basketball. We're very fortunate to have the Fred situation - thanks to Pollard. All that said, I believe (hope) Fred sees it the same way and we are all in for much better things to come - for years!

I don't think he wants to do that for a while. He is smart, and probably could comfortably retire tomorrow if he wanted. He will be around Ames until his kids get out of school.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fred hasn't any interest at all in the NBA. Also he has been surprisingly good at what he does, coaching at ISU. To give that up to coach big time talent trying to arbitrate their salaries would be hard for someone I believe like Fred. Imagine not having the chance to coach a guy like Tyrus McGee? Who would want the NBA after Tyrus McGee? I think Fred came here because he wanted to, he could probably have worked into the NBA from other channels. I hope this is Valhalla for Fred.

IIRC, the way it went down was that we weren't even considering Orr initially. Frieder, an assistant on Orr's staff at Michigan at the time, was the choice. When we called Johnny about it, he asked how much we were willing to pay Frieder, and upon hearing the figure, decided that he'd be interested in the job for himself. We hired Johnny, and Frieder took over at Michigan.
So to say that we picked Orr over Coach K is slightly inaccurate...we picked Frieder over Coack K, and then we picked Orr over Frieder.

Also, why are people so convinced that CFH will (or won't) someday coach in the NBA? It just seems silly to pretend to know what Fred's long-term personal ambitions are, especially when the speculation is different from what Fred has repeated multiple times in public.
I'm okay with that Pollard guy being the AD, if he sticks around for that long.
