Do you get irrationally angry when fixing/assembling things?

Do you swear at the mower when fixing it?

When I lived in DSM and IKEA was 2 hours away I would get pissed at IKEA stuff because I didn’t want to break it and have to go back the next weekend. Now that I live 10 minutes from an IKEA I’m a lot more rational when assembling the stuff.

Last year we got a baby dresser from IKEA. Got it home, got it out. The top of the dresser/changing table had a visible crack down the whole piece. I drove back the 90 minute (one way) drive to return the old and get a new the next day? I think? Maybe it was the next weekend. It was like 95 that day though, omg. And my 7 month pregnant self hauled in the old dresser and brought out the new with no help. I was salty. Both in terms of attitude and perspiration.

Cool story bro I know

I used to be this way then I just got over it and no big deal anymore. I’m 38 but I was really angry until I was about 30.

This is me but I didn't figure it out until I was 41. I know the exact moment the lightbulb went off. When I was a teenager, I spent countless hours working on cars. All of my cars were junk, combined with cars generally being trash in the 70s and 80s provided lots of grease monkey opportunity. For my first car, I was given a '79 Cutlass with a bad motor and transmission. Dad bought me a motor and transmission from an '82 Caprice, set it on the garage floor and said "you figure out how to get that in there, you've got a car." And off I went. I loved working on stuff.

Youtube came along and ruined me. I had to do everything perfectly to spec, and I expected to do it in the amount of time listed in the manual (despite lots of beer consumption getting in the way). I would get furious.

When I was 41, I was putting a water pump on my fun car. 1.5 hour job, I'm two hours in, cursing the car, cursing the video, parts falling into panels to never be seen again, the whole 9 yards. And this is a pretty simple repair.

The light bulb went off. I realized I used to enjoy doing this stuff when I didn't have a video, or usually even a manual. If I'm not going to like it, why I am doing it? Who cares how long it takes - this isn't even my daily driver!

I do a lot of it again, and I'm enjoying it. If it's something that needs to be done now, I pay someone to do it. If it can wait, I don't care how long it takes me. (irrigation system excluded - I'm done with that POS, someone else can do it)

The wife is wondering how long that exhaust system is going to sit in the empty garage stall. I'll get it done someday.

Astonishing, as I’m also a motor head. I never was a mechanic career wise I’m in sales but it’s a fun hobby. I was the guy that would throw tools. First car was a 79 Thunderbird that I still own. Snowmobiles really pushed me over the edge as my temper got the best of me. Owning an F body didn’t help either. Damn Camaro’s.

Last night we got home from a day of biking and drinking. I could not get my bike on the lift for whatever reason when I was putting everything away. I was certain there was some other worldly force working against me. And I was drunk.

I enjoy fixing and building things, so typically it's a no.

That's not to say that I don't get frustrated with some things (stuck bolts, stripped screw heads, etc). I don't really drink at all, so I don't have the beer brain going on as well.

I do agree with what some others have said in here. I'm not above paying people to come fix something that needs to be done correctly and in a hurry. Furnace goes out in November in NY and the house is rapidly approaching the point where pipes would freeze? Called the repair tech even though I was 95% sure of what was wrong. Refrigerator control panel goes out and we had a second working fridge in the basement? I messed around with that for two days and had it fixed in 15 minutes once the control board arrived.

My wife doesn't understand why I get so pissed off when putting things together, or trying to fix something. I tried to explain its a guy thing, but she wasn't buying it. Maybe its just me?
I am convinced that manufacturers go out of their way in order to **** with us in terms of quality control. They get off on it.

Is it really my fault that no matter how nice the sum of an items parts are, those individual parts are always STUPID CHEAP PIECES of ****! I don't think so, especially since I remember this being the case for my dad too.

I had that swingset.
So did we! (Albeit different colors).

And my apologies to to my neighbors, but I'm definitely a swearer when it comes to various outdoor activities. (Ie. my leaf blower catching on every single shrub and getting unplugged, or my various outdoor power tools not starting, etc).

The funny thing is, I am rarely a swearer in general, but when fixing things, or performing yard work, it brings the worst in me.

Doing trim work around the house. I effing hate doing trim so so much.

Working on a car all day, outside on equipment, on the farm, or on the yard no problem what so ever.

I am really getting irritated by the number of things I need to fix now. Samsung dryer went out a week ago and then the Samsung dishwasher decided to start acting up and putting out random codes. Then mowing today after I had just done a 50 hr maintenance the freaking transmission belt breaks. Going to call that one in.

Today I replaced two light fixtures, a shower head, a garbage disposal, and a kitchen faucet. Only two trips to Lowe's, and the second was because I overtightened the J trap and cracked the PVC. Pretty good day overall. We just moved into a new house and have lots of little projects.

Two instances of me recently losing my **** when it comes to building and repair.

I bought one of those self-locking metal storage shelving units for the basement, and as I was building it, no matter what I would do it wouldn’t assemble square, meaning as I built it up it wouldn’t assemble properly. Not to mention every time I tried to fix it the stupid thing would disassemble and collapse. I’m fortunate my basement is unfinished because I was chucking bars across the basement in frustration. Didn’t help that the floor in the basement isn’t perfectly level, but that wasn’t crossing my mind at that moment.

Second instance is in the kitchen, where the bottom of the silverware drawer has separated from the sides. This one really isn’t my fault as we think the drawer has been damaged when we bought the house, and any attempt to actually fix the drawer made it worse. I’m guessing the drawer suffered water damage at some point because something like that shouldn’t just crumble in an attempt to fix it. So now we get to replace a drawer for a kitchen that badly needs to be remodeled.
