Don't Expect Many If Any Changes In Offense

I listened to Monday's Two Guys Named Chris and Hassel nailed it. There are no issues with how Matt Campbell wants us to play offensively. BUT...if you are going to play that way - low possession, mid-teens scoring - you MUST be elite at the little things. And, we all know, ISU is the opposite of elite while Iowa is very good to elite in the margins. If you are going to play Campbell's offensive style you must have:

1. Excellent punting (we suck)
2. Excellent FG kicking (we suck)
3. Limit turnovers and mistakes (we suck)
4. Limit penalties, especially "simple" ones like false starts (we suck)
5. Get turnovers from your defense that position the offense well (we aren't very good).
6. Get scores from your defense (we suck)

And that's just to name a few. Every single one of these is amplified when you are playing games in the teens. So Matt Campbell is crazy if he thinks we play this way and be terrible in the margins.

To me, we need structural changes because we have demonstrated for years we really suck in the margins. Until Matt realizes this, we are going to be 7-6 with NFL talent or 4-8 with a Top 10 defense.

Keep coming back to this. That’s where these games were lost this year, every single one of them. Sure you can talk bad execution……These games were lost this year by not doing the small things right. Missed FGs, bad punts, blocked punts, drops, false starts, etc…

So if he fires only Tom Manning that's not enough for you? That's crazy...
You have to go outside the program, and you also have to let the new guy pick his staff.

That is completely normal in business and coaching.

Why only remove part of a tumor?

And if the tumor isn't dealt with, it is safe to assume that it now includes CMC himself.

Loyal Sons Forever True? Really? A coaching staff being true would be trying new things and be at least showing that something different is happening to try and achieve victory, instead of harping execution. Two way street.

Like Honor before Victory, I'll take victory thank you. Honor comes from victory.

Show me an honorable bunch of losers, and I'll show you a bunch of losers.

Our players are not being taught how to perform well and are not being put in position to win.

Yep.

If he fires at least half of the offensive staff, including Manning.

Absent that, there is absolutely no reason to believe any significant changes will be made, and thus we can expect similar, or worse, results moving forward.

If success rides on having a top 3 rounds NFL draft caliber running back to be above .500, well I have bad news for people.......

So YOU want to make the decision as to who gets fired. It really isn’t Campbell’s decisions when you dictate and demand what Campbell is to do.

Need to be Iowa or Kansas State Bill Snyder era.

That doesn't mean run what they run, etc. You just need to be really fundamentally sound as a foundation if you're going to play how CMC wants to play at a place like ISU.
How is that even possible without a Special Teams coach.

East of Neptune, IA.
I said this last week and it didn't get much traction. I'll say it again.

Let Myers walk.
Demote Manning to OL coach (his specialty??) only.
Beg Alex Golesh to come back. Killing it at Tennessee.
Golesh's next move will be to a HC position. He not coming back here as an OC, but if he did, do you bring him back at higher salary than Heacock?

Matt is one of the most professional coaches out there when it comes to not throwing people under the bus publicly. We should appreciate that about him.

Also when Matt praises a group publicly I think he is just trying to let them know that he believes in them. I am concerned going forward when he praises a group because that means they aren’t gonna be good. It’s been the new tight ends, OLine , and this year the running backs.
I hear ya....and I do think there is some truth to that. Although he did praise the secondary all spring and fall, and they were awesome.

Here are some quotes from a DM Register article today from CMC regarding the offense:

"With Iowa State last in the Big 12 most statistical categories and ranked 110th nationally in scoring, there’s a natural inclination to wonder if something is structurally or philosophically wrong with the Cyclones’ offense.

That, though, is not what coach Matt Campbell says he sees when he watches film of his team.

“With that, you see inept, an inability to function,” Campbell said of a hypothetical fundamentally flawed group. “Those aren’t our issues. Where we’re at offensively, it’s been the inconsistency.”

"“It’s not the call. It’s not the play. They are all there,” Campbell said. “It’s the execution of it. Those are things that continue to lead to inconsistency. That’s the hard thing about it and the frustrating thing about it.

Even has the players spouting the exact same thing. Per Noel - "“It wasn’t the play call. It was just us executing the play, being able to pick up the right blocks and do our right assignments to be able to execute that play.” Also - "“Knowing that it’s the execution part, knowing that it’s something we can fix and hold ourselves accountable for is in a way a good thing because we know we can go back and fix it.”

CMC is doubling/tripling down on his offense and play-calling. Given this, I expect to see little change for next year (staff, offense plays, scoring, and ultimately record). I guess he has now watched the tape and has decided it is not his system that is at fault. Unsurprising to say the least.

Those were the comments from his presser that was on the home page of CF. I was surprised he threw the players under the bus like that. 4th and short with a shotgun run play with a less than stellar Oline is on the staff. No matter what he says.

I’d also wager otherwise. I’d be all in on otherwise too if Jamie has a sit down with him this December talking coach changes.

OL coach needs to be gone yesterday. Bring someone in new and I don't care if he has a man blocking or a zone run preference scheme wise. Anyone who started this year should be having to scrap and fight for a starting role next year. There was too much complacency on the OL this August. Did they not hit enough in camp or compete enough? They have had zero edge or attitude all year.

It goes far beyond special teams.

Being halfway decent at special teams shouldn't require a coach imo. Just emphasize it to make fundamentals a hallmark of the program.

They talk about it being fixable, but it has been an issue for years, so if it is fixable, how come they have not fixed it by now. Didn't the Iowa DC make a comment that they pretty much know what play we are going to run most of the time?
Updated your comment. Iowa states best team ever finished 7-6 because they continue to pound square peg into round hole. We had two starting running backs in the NFL and all rushing yards earned by them at ISU were usually very tough to come by.

The only real reason to watch this crap now is to post on this forum about how bad and predictable the football is that we are watching, lay the blame for it on CMC, and watch his defenders rally and attack like you have offended their god.

The entertainment is here, online, and not on the TV.
On TV you get to see the same five plays on offense and the same three responses in the post game press conference.

At least there is variety in responses here.

ISU can sell 30-40,000 season tkts with a bad FB team we've done it before and it would happen again. 30,000 is like a base that shows no matter what.
30 to 40K at a game after ALL of the facility upgrades... work with donors...and a light crowd in CyTown come game day. That sounds exactly like what JP would like his swan song to be.
JP isn't going to tolerate back to back to back crappy football.... ie 21, 22, 23.

I don't care if it's 5 plays if they're run really well and compliment one another.
