hiawatha, ia
he was on the Scott Van Pelt show the other day.....SVP was talking him up and asking him about HB & their relationship.

good for him and his success.......will never understand how his dad couldn't succeed at ISU, but we are moving on.

Senior McDermott was never all-in.

Great story from an Iowa kid. Wish him the best of luck! A lot of hard work has to be part of his success. It probably didn't hurt having a coach for a Dad either.

Why, if one was to look back at things, one could probably come to the conclusion that said coach was spending more of his time and attention developing his son (aka meal ticket) as opposed to being a top tier division one coach.

I don't begrudge anyone being a good parent and involved family member. But you take more than a million per year, and I expect some god damn results. I mean 60 hour work week dedication. How do you have Johnson, Brackins, Gilstrap and others and never make any postseason tourney?

Turns out, we had TWO of the best players in the COUNTRY in our back yard, and we didn't get either one! We are cursed beyond words.

I would be really curious to see how he would do in a BCS league. He wouldn't score nearly as many points but I think he would still be a very good player. He would still get his points outside but would have a much tougher time scoring in the post.

But no doubt, he is having a great year so far.

It's just insane that 2 of the top players in college basketball came from the same high school...and I believe all 5 starters on that team are playing somewhere.

I have not seen Niang play, but does he have some of the same qualities/characteristics as Doug?

Hinrich and Collison were both in our backyard but ended up at KU and we had two outstanding seasons in 99-00 and 00-01. Hell, if Hinrich stayed committed to ISU, its debatable if we get Tinsley and Kantrail Horton.

Graduating from Ames High in 2010 with HB and Doug I was blessed with some incredible basketball memories in high school. HB was the number 1 prospect in that class and had all of the lights on him, every game. He is easily the better player and I know Doug personally would agree to that.
In almost every game their senior year Doug was actually scoring just as much as HB because of the offense they ran. He was MVP of the ESPN game they played at Hilton and should have been at the State Tournament they way he played, but with Roy Williams in the house we all knew it was going to HB.
If you every got the chance to watch one of their games Doug would make every shot he took from about 8 feet and in from the hoop. His rebounding was great, passed well, had a great shot, and never played selfish. He didn't go to ISU because his Dad was likely out.
I understand I may be bias toward this team but I think they are either the best team ever in Iowa High School history or close to it with two All Americans and several role players that are all playing college ball except for the center who is pitching at Evansville in Indiana. They ended the year I think #4 in the country and were the only non-prep school in the rankings that high.

I like the kids game.. From the time I met him he seemed like a DB
He has a very laid back personality but worked very hard to get where he is. Not sure how well u knew him but I thought he was a very nice kid.

The only thing that bothers me is that I truely believe the only reason he was not recruited here was because his dad was on the brink of failure and he didn't want his son to go through the awkwardness of seeing his dad get fired for the team he plays on.
Why does that bother u? Should his Dad have done whats best for ISU and himself over his son, or any kid for that matter?

Ya UNIs homecoming this year. Big line for the bars he walks up to the front and then was yelling don't you know who I am. Idk its not much but hate when athletes pull that card
I don't believe it. That story is way over used.

Must have been the coaching...

Dougie played last night against two 6-11 people. He may be a dinky Larry Bird type shooter who just finds a way to score that will translate well when he hits the pros. Yes, if you lead the country in scoring, you end up somewhere in the NBA. Remember the Jimmer. Right now, he is more valuable to CU than HB is to UNC.

McDermott's career-high lifts Bluejays past Tulsa - Omaha.com

Road game.

“It was just one of those games where I got the touch around the basket early,'' he said. “My teammates did a really good job of finding me.
“Their guys are physical, probably the most physical players that I've faced all year, but I was just feeling it tonight.''

The Golden Hurricane started two 6-11 players in Steven Idlet and Kodi Maduka and brought 6-9 D.J. Magley off the bench. Each took a turn at trying to slow McDermott to no avail.

“Doug is very versatile on the offensive end, and he has a group of teammates that are unselfish enough to recognize his versatility,'' Greg McDermott said. “I gave all the credit in the locker room to his teammates, because they found him and got him some easy shots.

“I was proud of the fact that our guys recognized what was there. Tulsa's plan was to take away our 3-point shot. We shot 28 3-point shots two nights ago, and we shot six tonight. Our execution on the offensive end was as good tonight as it's been all year.''

Might be McD's best recruit ever.

Okay you don't have to believe it. I was 5 feet away but alright. I dont really have a reason to lie.

That is a common occurance on the hill in CF, the athletes walk to the front of the line and get in. Big deal.

I find it hard to believe he yelled that.
