Dune Universe Thread

Hoping to have the main six done by the time this movie releases, then probably onto another genre for a bit. Any of the "non-main books" stand out in particular?

There is a prequel that is set on IX during the butlerian jihad that I enjoyed. But IMO I think there is a consistent degradation in quality as the books are released.

I read a few of the "expanded universe" ones.

They're... fine. Sort of an elevated fan fiction but nothing to write home about.

I even have a hard time defending Heretics and Chapterhouse.

The tetralogy of Dune, Messiah, Children, and God Emperor is about as good as it gets.

John Campea talks about seeing the first 8 minutes of Dune 3 at Cinemacon. It takes a while for them to get to what they actually saw on the screen but they were gushing over it.

Trying to keep expectations in check but it is so hard after Part 1 and Part 2.

If Dune MILF mommy likes it then it has to be good.

Then again, the structure of the trilogy is going to be "weird" compared to what most audiences expect. Part 1 was establishing characters, setting, and the main conflicts. Part 2 was the traditional "finale" of the big war/action movie with a big victory like say The Return of the King or The Return of the Jedi.

Messiah is (mind spoilers) a... smaller story than the end of Dune and Part 2. It is a tale of palace intrigue and Paul moping about feeling bad about what he's done and Alia feeling bad about what she is.

We're used to seeing these stories end on triumphant notes. But we've already had ours.

Now we've got a bad hangover. We'll see how it goes on screen!

In the video I posted above they said Villeneuve described it as a fast paced thriller with more action than the previous 2 films, which seems hard to reconcile with everything I've heard about Messiah from people who have read the books.

The trailer makes it look like we’ll see
more of the jihad carried out by Paul’s followers, which are skipped by the time jump between Dune and Messiah

Majorly dipping into spoiler territory here --

Interesting. I am trying to think of a way you could make Messiah, a notoriously "plodding" story compared to the briskness of the second half of the original Dune, somehow more action-oriented.

The novel time skips way past the jihad. Paul and the Fremen have crushed overt opposition militarily and suppressed political opposition. Nobody's could resist Paul's superhuman ability to see possible futures, which means he always makes the optimal move. It's like a football coach calling plays based not on what he thinks they might do but based on knowing the outcome before you call the play.

It traps him in a defined set of possible futures, which has negative effects on his mental health after the defined set of goals of defeating the Harkonnen and Corrino conspiracists who betrayed and murdered his father are accomplished. He's got nothing in the immediate future to worry about to focus him and only the dire long-term implications of the Golden Path, but that's more of a Children thing.

In steps the conspiracy -- the thoroughly defeated factions who will do anything to break the Atreides stranglehold in the Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilaxu, Irulan Corrino, and the Space Guild. They use their minor oracles to "jam" Paul's visions of the future, which means he has to call plays based on what he thinks will happen instead of what he knows will happen. He's still good at it, but he's much more vulnerable, and introduce him to the reincarnated flesh of Duncan Idaho, something like a brother to him.

There's a good political thriller in there. If I had to guess, rather than the jihad and the conspiracy being sequential events like in the novels, they'll be "run" simultaneously in the film adaptation. I think I saw a 21-year time skip reported (enough time for Alia to age up to Anya Taylor-Joy). You would have to think the jihad is pretty much over by then, but I guess we're going to have to see the results.

I don't remember any knife duels in Messiah similar to the ones between Paul and Jamis, the Atreides soldier and Feyd, and Paul and Feyd at the end of the second film you can drop in, either.
