I was thinking about that question too, and I can't think of any really good ones. Ray and Johnny Cash were okay. Part of the problem may be that we see actors portraying artists we know too well.

It's been forever since I've seen Ray but at least those two movies showed or reminded us of their struggles and their flaws.

Documentaries capture the situations way better. For example , I saw one on Amy Winehouse several years ago that was a real eye opener.

Based on another movie I've seen from this director (Moulin Rouge-hated it) and the trailer (no hint of anything new and interesting about Elvis), I'll probably pass on this one. But it may be of interest to others.

I’m going to agree with @dahliaclone : give Strictly Ballroom a try. Quirky movie with great characters. I don’t think Moulin Rouge was Baz’s best work.

I'm waiting for a David Carradine movie. How's a director put and ending on that one? Speaking of which, you never see an Elvis movie where he ends up on the can. Can't imagine how constipated he was with all the pain pills he was popping. Probably straining real hard with that Elvis rolled upper lip thing going on when the lights went out.

I'll disagree on the Beatles part for sure. They were definitely pioneers music-wise. Elvis was maybe more showmanship than groundbreaking musically. But both drew from blues artists quite a bit.

I agree with this, but what I was talking about is all the hype surrounding the Beatles after they broke up. I’m not really speaking to the talent as much as hype surrounding the artist.
