Can we trade in the new RV lot for a basketball coach. Does it work like that?

:jimlad: kinda

Before the season I thought Prohm would be back regardless due to covid/financials. It would be difficult to fire him if Iowa State made the tournament this year. For me personally, it would take at least a Sweet 16 to consider having him back. Even then our lows have been so low.

The 'financials' thing is probably overblown.

For one, if donors are there to can him, that makes that go away entirely. And on the other side, if he sees the writing on the wall and goes and gets himself a new contract somewhere else, that also handles things.

But lets say the AD has to cover the buyout. Ask yourself, what are the odds if we keep him that he's still fired next year. Id wager those odds are >90%. So at that point you're really just talking about the difference between the buyout this year and next, about a million dollars. The AD can certainly cover that (and the cost of not firing him could easily cost more than that in lost donations, gate revenue, concessions, etc)

Like I said, that was prior to the season. A lot of new information has come out.

If we end the year strong Prohm will be back. By strong I mean maybe keeping games close. Covid might save his ass in a few ways. Budget shortfall and built in excuse of losing half the team midway through the season

I thought that for awhile too. But look at Prohm’s track record. After a terrible 2017-18 season, we added 3 NBA level players to our roster (Halliburton, THT, Shiaok) and Prohm proceeded to go 9-9 in conference and a first round exit. There is no where near that level of talent walking into Hilton next year plus the program’s base is worse now. There is no way Pollard can bring him back without more major damage to the program.

I don't know. I thought the door was bolted shut, but now there is just a little crack in it.

We played well enough last night to beat bottom-half Big 12 teams. Despite our record, Prohm can have the guys playing hard, which I think translates into at least a few wins the rest of the Big 12 season assuming there are just going to be some nights where our shots fall and the other team is cold and we win one finally.

Bolton is still legit -- a good piece to sell on an incoming coach, whoever that is.

Walker emerging is a really encouraging sign. Opens up some two-PG possibilities with Hunter next year, and Walker is large enough and long enough where he can guard 3s and 4s, not just 1s and 2s. He has some work to do (six TOs last night), but it also allows Bolton to shift to his more natural SG position where he can hunt shots.

Harris looks like he'd be a good heat check bench gunner on a good team. Probably not a starter, though.

Still need to get Young (and he's way better than Conditt), Johnson, and Jackson back fully.

I was encouraged from what I saw last night. Maybe we'll salvage a few wins this year. I still don't think Prohm is going to be back, but my expectation went from like 1% to 10% as a result of that game. Plus, even if Prohm is not retained, the roster is showing it has some potential to sell to the next coach and that the next guy might not have to come into a situation where the cupboard is completely bare and requires a hard rebuild from scratch.

Campbell did a lot of good with old Rhoads guys to accelerate his rebuilding of the program (e.g., Lazard, Lanning, Campos, Ryen, KCM, Downing, Bulter, etc.). I want to think the same is possible in MBB.

But we also did that the first time we played WVU and were still trash after.

They played ut tough in Austin, and played well against baylor after the first West Virginia game.

played bad against tech, and then stopped playing for 2 weeks.

if, like, truth actually matters anymore

So we are now rewarding Prohm another year because his players are playing hard? I guess it’s nice to see they haven’t quit but it shouldn’t factor into his future, especially if he’s gonna have to restart again next year.

can you link the post where anyone said that?

this is bad, even for you.

No one is saying that.

Finding a few things to be happy about does not change anything.

So what? Bad teams play good teams close sometimes. That TCU team that went 0-18 a few years ago only lost to #25 Oklahoma by 8 on the road, #15 Texas by 5, West Virginia by 5. It's not a sign of improvement until they start doing it consistently and actually pulling off a few wins.

Look at the numbers this year. Shooting 2's or 3's isn't the big issue. Prior to Covid postponements we had almost the exact same shooting % from 2 and 3 as our opponents.

This year we are doing poorly because we are horrible at:
  • Defending the dribbler. Guys get beat causing others to foul.
  • Weak Offensive & Defensive Rebounds
  • Not Physical. We don't shoot enough free throws. Our opponents make more free throws than ISU attempts.
I agree our offense stinks. It is all about pounding the basketball. He's all about PNR and the weave. No passing, no cutters, weak-a$$ screens. To top it off, we are more concerned about getting back on defense vs. sending 2-3 guys to the offensive boards. When we take shots, typically we send at most 1 guy to grab offensive rebounds. We are lucky to get a handful of offensive rebounds each game, while the opponent typically gets a dozen or more. More shots = More Points.
What I don't get on this is that we don't send people to the offensive glass and still get beat back and give up easy baskets on missed shots. If we aren't going to the glass, this should never happen, yet it does constantly.

Oh god we are going to do this now aren't we. We are going to win like 5 games total but show a little "moxy" and people are going to try to talk themselves back into Prohm despite being truly horrid 3 out of the last 4 years.

Nobody is talking themselves back into prohm.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing for these players to experience some success though.

One of my favorite possessions we had was against Oklahoma State. We have one player shooting a free throw with the other 4 back on the defensive end. We miss the free throw, OSU makes TWO passes up the court to a wide open shooter in the corner.

However, you are also convinced that all these kids are going to transfer so other than a few wins for the program in February it will do nothing for the future of the program.
