After reading the wonderful article today on Cyclones.com about Eric Heft, I couldn't seem to get one thing off of my mind ... Pete Taylor. I often think about Pete and just how it was to listen to him most Saturdays since the Cyclones were never on TV. So I went searching for the Pete Taylor tribute I remembered listening to some five/six years ago after it first happened and I did come across it. I just finished listening to it and just like five/six years ago, I cried like a little baby. Pete Taylor ...... and Eric Heft, are Iowa State athletics moreso than Johnny Orr, Larry Eustachy, Dan McCarney, etc., etc. It takes a lot to be a great radio broadcaster, and these two men are just that.

Also while in my mission to escape back to the past, I came across Steve Rushin's article on SI about how Pete Taylor was "world famous in Iowa." Pete Taylor is the epitomy of a great broadcaster. Never did he hide behind a catch phrase. The man told it like it was and you knew exactly what was going on at that point in the game. While Pete was great, Eric is equally great. I just thought I would share some of my emotions on what these two guys have meant to Iowa State athletics.

If you would like to lose yourself in the past, here are the two links

Those clips were from the best of times for ISU.

We've been in a "funk" as an athletic department ever since then.

I miss you Pete!

FSU? Did I miss something? There was no FSU on that.

You had the kick against Iowa

Wallace's run against Tech

Billups return against Pitt

Seiler against Nebbie

Fizer against Texas

The Sullivan shot...I'm not sure what game that was though.

But FSU??

Walters is in his own right a good broadcaster and he and Heft are great together just like Heft and Taylor were great together. I think the bond the two of them (Heft and Walters) have is Pete Taylor, they both learned the trade from the man and are two of the members of the Pete Taylor school of broadcasting. I hope Walters is around for a long time. I sort of envision Ben Bruns possibly stepping in to Heft's roll when he finally calls it quits. Bruns is another no nonsense guy who fits the same kind of role as Heft and Taylor.
