Everyone is selfish sometimes. I cannot blame Mac for this. Can you say you have never been selfish before?

What I find infuriating as a dual ISU/UNI fan is that he is taking Doug away from UNI to go play for him (it isn't settled or done yet contrary to reports, but the writing is on the wall). I find that very selfish of him and quite a slap in the face to his alma mater and best friend.

Before I knew that Doug was going to follow him to Creighton I was wishing him luck. Now? Don't care if he never has another winning season again.

Hey! 1,000 posts! Happy Day!

I'm still convinced that JP knew there was interest in hiring away McDermott, and decided to play "used car salesman" with him the same way that a used car salesman would try to sell the lot lemon: "Oh yeah, this is a great car. One owner, low miles, runs great. This is my favorite car on the lot, and I'm behind this car 100%. Oh, by the way, 'I'm the Car Fox!!!'"

You might be right.. but we'll never really know, will we? Well, unless JP publishes a book later on.

Looking like JP has the magic touch to get out of tough situations.

We know that Omaha was getting tired of Dana after he came back from Arkansas. He never won more than two games in NCAA in sixteen years after coming over from KSU. This season was a huge disappointment as his team crumpled near the end. McD knows how to handle these tough situations. He learned how to do the ropa dope.

Man some of you are brain dead if you can't figure out what is going on.

I just love it when people start off their posts by insulting the intelligence of other posters. Surefire way to get people to your point of view there....

Anyway, look, I'm happy that Creighton took McD away and paid us close to $1 million to do it. Best way for him to leave ISU, plain and simple. We lucked out. However, as a UNI alum and fan my issue with it is the way he is taking UNI's best recruit with him so late in the recruiting period. I think that's underhanded, selfish, and a slap in the face to his alma mater and friend.

I agree with you . . . if McD was a man of integrity . . he would of told his son to man up and stay at UNI. But it is all about $, not facing the truth, and spin. What a rip off of UNI and ISU.

Of course everyone, including myself, is selfish at times. We need to have our own self-interest in mind. My big beef is the level and specific context of his selfishness. Taking away your best friend's most highly rated incoming player this late in the recruiting game sucks for UNI, and it's being instigated by their former coach! It's complete BS!

Now, with that being written, if the only way to get McDermott at Creighton and away from Iowa State was for his son to join him there, well, for Iowa State in the long run maybe it's a worthwhile deal. Just sucks that in a win-win-win for Iowa State, McDermott, and Creighton, that the only big loser in the whole deal is UNI.

Ben Jacobson deserves better, especially from his so-called best friend.

Ok, let me draw the comparisons for you. I punch you in nose - not cool right? just like Mac leaving the program before "the job was done". Due to this punch and your trip to the ER... you find a tumor you would not have found otherwise. Excellent news! Just like Mac being gone. Should you be any less mad about me punching you for no reason? some people feel the same way about Mac stepping out.

Like I said, I'm perfectly happy with the situation. I can just see the angry villagers' perspective.

"The Job was not getting done" regardless, so why would we feel better by firing him and spending $3.3 million more to do it. Would I rather be punched in the nose(Gmac leaving now) or being run over by your SUV going 55 mph (Gmac getting fired the end of next season in worst shape then it is now) where who cares if they found the brain tumor laying in the pile of grey matter on the concrete. Plus my family has to come up with $2.0 million to bury what's left of me. If your ego is bruised, get over yourself.......

What actually happened is not only does my family have to avoid coming up with $2.0 million next year to bury me, but a long lost relative of mine died and left me the sole heir of their $3.3 million estate(all in cash of course) which pushes me to get a get a health checkup that finds a tumor which is easily fixed by daily aspirin and 2-3 beers every other night to heal.

But either way..............the TUMOR is gone! :jimlad:

Hey, could not agree more. I will never hate on McD for wanting to coach his son, I'm just trying to explain the situation if you applied only principle logic to it, as many of the angry people are trying to do.

I'm just glad our program has a chance to recover.

I am a very happy guy today. I have not liked our coach and wanted him gone for two years now, so don't get me wrong, I'm a happy guy. Coach McD has always annoyed me with the things he says and his failure to face the truth, but some of his quotes from yesterday really bug me.

Why on earth was the opportunity to coach his son at Creighton such a big deal? Didn't he have that exact same opportunity to do that in Ames at ISU? So he didn't think his son was a Big 12 talent. Maybe competing against better talent would've made his son a better player, it's not like we didn't have the scholarships open.

Even on his way out the door though, he's playing this off like that was his main reason for leaving. Not that fact that he's been horrible at ISU, was going to get canned next year and ZERO talent coming back and was given a gift in the Creighton job. Tell it like it for once at least McD. Good riddance.

Great Post. He has annoyed me in this mannor as well. GOOD RIDDANCE. GMac was a horrible coach and it showed that he was in wayyyy over his head here in BCS.....Hilton Magic Country. Horrible hire......now is time for us to make it all right.

I mean waking up this moring was excellent. My coffee tasted great....my eggs were fantastic......I mean, GMac can no longer coach my Alma Mater.....Thank Goodness!!! Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Well, do you really think his biggest reason to get out of ISU is bacause of his son? No way. He need to make up a reason so he can exit with some grace. Do you expect him he say "I quit because I cannot win?" in a press conference?

Everyone is selfish sometimes. I cannot blame Mac for this. Can you say you have never been selfish before?

That's some shortsighted thinking right there. I'm in the happy Mac is gone, no complaints camp, but I can certainly understand where people are coming from. Just because in reality, he should have gotten out before he was fired, the fact is, JP supported him until the end of his contract, but it's clear Mac didn't feel the same way.

If I came up to you and randomly punched you in the face and broke your nose, so that you went to the ER... but while you were there the doctors found out you had a brain tumor that would never have been found if I hadn't have sent you to the ER, does that mean you should be happy with me punching you in the face randomly?

The end doesn't always (completely) justify the means.

OK, I don't get why people are having issues with this. We ALL know what happened. GMac knew that he was likely to get fired after next year. The fanbase was in revolt. Here come CU with a golden parachute. And the cherry is that he can take Doug with him. Win-win for both sides.

ISU gets $800k and avoids a $2M buyout? We should be dancing in the streets! WHO CARES how the departure is spun? Everyone knows that Pollard didn't fire him because of the buyout. I'd have been happy to see ISU give CU $1M to take him, but to GET $800k? Wow.

I think it is extremely classless to have UNI release one of their recruits for him, even though it's his son, it shouldn't be automatic, he obviously went to UNI and asked them to release him, what are they going to say, "no"? They used resources in recruiting him and McD just gets to come along and say, oh no, he's my son, he's coming with me.

McD is a classless dbag, and Doug isn't going to be playing for the best team in the MVC anymore.

Who freaking cares about UNI? To me, that's a bonus in the whole deal. We get rid of a bad coach. We get $800k and avoid a buyout. UNI loses a player who would surely hurt us down the line.

I just wanted to know what you thought about his quote where he said he hopes whoever the new coach that comes in let's him dunk the ball in practice more than McD did.

WHOA!! Where was this quote? I missed it. Why would a coach not want a player to dunk if they can. It is the highest percentage shot available if you can get above the rim with ease. Everytime I see a lazy layup from a big guy roll off the rim, I am yelling, "JUST DUNK IT!!! DAMN!!!"

Yeah, like this never, ever happens in college sports, right?

I think Ben Jacobson understands the world of college athletics more than you do. I think it hilarious that you are speaking for Ben Jacobson. Does he feel slighted, offended? Does he feel like it is a slap in the face?

I guess if you can speak for Ben Jacobson, I guess that gives me the right to do so too. I think Ben Jacobson is happy for Greg and Doug and it is not an issue for him.

Well, if you are trying to go for biggest a**hole post of the day, you certainly have my vote. At what point in my post did I ever imply that I am speaking for Ben Jacobson? Go back and read my post, especially those two words where I have written my issue. If it helps out with your comprehension, you can move your lips while you read.

Ever heard of disagreeing without being disagreeable? Damn, I would hate to see what happens at your house when the milk gets spilled

When McDermott came to ISU, Jordan Eglseder was considering decomitting from UNI to follow him here. He had high major offers prior to choosing UNI. Mac convinced him to honor his commitment and stick with Jacobson. UNI doesn't achieve this past season without Eglseder, so Jacobson probably isn't all that upset Mac wants to coach his son. He sort of owes Mac one.

Here's what Eglseder said at the time of his recruitment, from the Waterloo Courier:

"As long as coach (Greg) McDermott stays there, Ill go there. If he moves on to a bigger school, Ill probably follow him," Eglseder said.

Courier story on Egleseder's UNI commitment.
