600+ yards in 2009 as a freshman. That could've been easily used to give Alex a break and improve the offense that year. That kind of production gets us what, at least another regular season win. Two? Three? KSU, KU, and MU were all within spitting distance. Would I trade a whole career of Woody for a shot at 8-9 regular season wins in 09? Yep. Without a doubt. Look, he made this argument when he brought up BW. Had he left him out I would've never had a second thought. But if he's going to say he was the better pick then BW he's opening himself to comparison. Plus, who knows how BW turns out if he comes here. We all know Iowa is a cesspool of **** ups. BW comes to ISU maybe he doesn't let his trouser snake out and we are all praising him as an all time rushing leader. So yes, given the option I would've taken BW in a heartbeat.

Doesn't Wegher play for Morningside now? I know I'd rather have the guy that has a significant role on an FBS team. Also put Wegher on the ISU team like you said that year and I guarantee he doesn't have anywhere near the same success. The running system Iowa has in place and not to mention all the linemen they send to the NFL each year makes it easy for any running back.

And to add to that, Wegher doesn't touch the field on either team that year with out an EXTREME RB turnover in front of him, which he had at Iowa. He might not have even seen the field before he went crazy had he came here. He only did at Iowa because they had no other options. He was what, their 4th or 5th string that year?

I think you're correct. He was pretty well buried on the depth chart.

I just looked at his statistics this year for Morningside. He's not even far and away the best runner on the team. He got 1106 yards on 189 carries. The next guy had 848 yards on 175 carries. They even had a third guy that had 108 carries for 534 yards.

And since we are playing the what if game, I will give you a more likely what if scenario. What if Wegher did come here instead of Woody, and like I have already stated, was about 3rd or 4th string. Unlike Iowa that year we did not have a rash of injuries and bad luck at the RB posistion, so he didn't see the field much if at all, and still went postal on his career after one year. Left the program never to be heard from or thought about again

All the mean while, we don't have Woody, and possibly lose one of the greatest games I've ever seen as a Cyclone fan against Okie St because we don't have his presence at the end of the game.

I think I'll keep the Okie State upset, and a great career from a great Cyclone. (Maybe we don't even go bowling that year if we didn't have Woody and had BW (or probably not by that point))

Shall I keep going?

Walk on who plays important snaps and gets tough yards. That sounds like a success story to me. Not a Heisman story, but a success story.

Walk on who wills a win over #2 team in the nation. Success story.

I'll take next if you don't mind...

Woody came to ISU and had a perfect niche. He didn't only contribute running the ball, but was also able to play some tight end and lead blocker. If Wegher was a Cyclone, what would his place have been? As I stated earlier, he isn't even that great of an NAIA player. He wasn't that fast or powerful. Maybe he could have been another James White type, but if you're looking for a 1-2 punch you want more diversity.

Sorry if we seem to be piling on, but I only feel its right to fight as hard for Woody as he has for us during his 5 years.

Gotta blame this coaching staff for not only under utilizing him, but when they did utilize him, they did so incorrectly (see the sweep on the goal against Texas this year).

Woody dominated a very good Kansas State team two years ago (Herman's 2nd to last game) and played okay against Rutgers in the bowl game (Herman's last game).

I think its fair to say Mess ruined what could have been with Jeff Woody.

Fiction: A player only should be judged strictly by the amount of yards he gained, with no regard given to context.

Fact: Jeff Woody is an all-time great, and fan favorite

The Wegher line was petty. Both schools wanted him and at the time I would've loved him had he picked ISU. Yes, he flamed out at Iowa but also helped them get to and win the Orange Bowl and had about as many yards his freshman season than Woody did his whole career. Woody is one of those guys that gets love because of his emotion, but his production left a lot to be desired.

Please go back to fisting yourself on the Squawk site of your choosing. If you aren't here to praise one of the all-time great leaders and SUCCESS stories in ISU history then please, move along. You are not needed here.

Jeff Woody gave me my absolutely favorite memory of decades of watching Cyclone football. My husband and I sat on the hill by the student section and watched a great comeback against the #2 team in the country, a game no one gave us a chance to win. And when Woody got those three carries, before he even touched the ball, you knew he was getting it and you knew he would not be denied the end zone. He had a vice grip on that ball. It was the strangest feeling, just knowing he would not be denied, wanting to see it happen, but somehow not really wanting it to end. Just magical.

The crowd that night was the faithful, similar to Kansas this year. Not the fair weather type, but the loyal and true. Poor guy sitting next to me on the hill was abandoned by his family, who left after his daughter's halftime senior band performance. He stuck it out. He needed to celebrate with someone and hugged me and twirled me around on the hill with my husband standing there watching and giving him a chest bump after. It was a CyclONEnation party like no other, courtesy in large part to Jeff Woody.

A good guy, the right guy, for a magical moment.

Wegher was a freshman in 2009. He shed off his redshirt the second game of the year, against ISU, and became an instant success along with Adam Robinson. Wegher scored the clenching TD in the Orange Bowl. Also, Wegher never got booted from any team, he left on his own accord. Did he waste his career? Yep. Did he also set a freshman record for yards at Iowa? Yep. Woody is a good feel cuddly story. Woody is not a good success story. Hate to be that way but it is what it is.

Woody was the MVP of the biggest offensive series in ISU football history. This is some ban-worthy trolling.

Great blog post by Woody, exactly what I would have expected by watching the way he plays and all his interviews over the years.

He proved himself worthy of getting a few series as the main back...plus he was the best back to have in there for pass protection. Way too often he came in and the entire stadium knew he was getting the ball, no other rbs or wrs had to fight against that kind of obvious play calling. He'd have rumbled for some big yards on unexpected plays a few times a game if we'd have ever given him a chance to run in non-inches situations.

The things that make Jeff Woody shine are not limited to prowess on the field. His leadership, his enthusiasm, his humility, his obvious love for all things Cyclone are things that don't show up on any stat sheet.

Woody has provided me with one of my favorite cyclone quotes. In an interview after the OSU game, he talked about the fans rushing the field, and mentioned that he worried he would be "trampled by happiness". I can't think of a more fitting way to describe that night.
