Funny timing on this story. I've been tailgating in Iowa City at Iowa games for about 10 years, and have NEVER had an issue with a fire in an enclosed fire pit. Just this last weekend at the Wisconsin game, the officers driving through our tailgating lot were ordering folks to put out their fire pit fires. I've never seen this done before. All they would tell me is that this order came "from people above my pay grade." I wonder if this isn't some new directive that came down from the regents or someting? Seems like a big coincidence that it is all of a sudden happening both in Ames and in Iowa City.

I've got an email in to the UI's campus security director. I'll post his response if i ever get one.

Not directly related, but on the subject of dbags ... that older guy directing traffic with the straw hat in G3/4 is a huge waste of space. We've seen him freak out at people 2 games in a row now - then he leaves a huge hole around us worth of green space. We didn't mind the spare room, but for the giant nit-fit he threw to get somebody to move their car 2 ft, it was messed up.

This is exactly what we had, with the lid, and it was a no go in G7.

Maybe he thought it was kind of girlish and his Standard Operations manual told him he could either #1. Ask you to put it out or #2. Revoke your man card.

He just chose the latter.

We've had quite a run ins with the dumb arses that try to direct us parking in G-7. The lot only gets about half full and they try to squeeze every last foot they can in between cars. We never had a single problem over in D-2 for 3 years. Now some snot nosed kid wants to have us towed or something else.

We always took an old Weber smoky joe and threw fire wood in that and never had a problem in D-2. No way we go back to G-7 next year.

About 5-10 to maybe 6-0. Kinda hefty. Glasses. Directs traffic on the way out of the stadium. Last week (at least) he was driving around in the little Ford Ranger, patrolling the lot. :skeptical:

Yep - I know who you're talking about and he thinks he's pretty important. D-bag is about the right term too. I haven't had any direct run ins with him, but have seen enough of his antics.

After the KU game, some lady in front of me was a little aggitated that he was holding up our line of traffic, but let the other lot empty by about 50 cars or so. He decided to flex his muscles and berate her and let a ton more cars go while the entirety of G7 waited behind her. I was next in line and had my window down so I could hear most all of what he was ranting on. First he threatened to go get a police officer "and she can take it up with them" and went on and on about how "we're getting out of here together", threatened to check her for DUI (???) and then yelled that he was taking down the license plate and they would receive a letter from the athletic department. No joke - this went on for about 5 minutes.

I'm also at a loss why the lot attendants in G7 feel the need to park all the cars. There are lines painted. 95% of the people know how to drive. If you are trying to meet up with another car or two, they make it obscenely difficult. Not to mention that G7 is ever at most 2/3rds full.

Was your pit enclosed with a lid?

So is this a different guy than the Hawk-homer who actually wears his Hawk baseball cap to the lots?

You were screwed. Maybe next time ask him, where you need to make a donation to light up? Did you offer him a brat since he was hefty?

It would go a long way toward fixing many of the issues listed in this thread if they would just hire someone who had seen a naked female other than on their computer monitor.

If it has a lid then it really isn't any different than a grill. I had a fireman friend tell me that in Des Moines, since they are illegal, all you have to do is have a package of hot dogs or marshmellows with you and you can say you are using it to cook and it's perfectly legal.

Yep, keep a marshmellow on a stick close by and you can shoo away the bad guys.

I was in the student lots and there were a couple of open fire pits, cops walked by and didn't say anything. The only thing that made me a little mad was one pit had a ton of paper on it burning so ash was flying all over the place. At first I thought a volcano may have erupted, but then realized it was just a little bon fire.

GLOBAL WARMING!!!!! Al Gore has asked JP to outlaw burning of any kind. They have already outlawed fires on the beach in the Puget Sound area because of GLOBAL WARMING??

In all my years of tailgating at ISU I've never been treated like crap by parking attendants, but this year in G-7 is atrocious and it's that one kid ripvdub is talking about.

The lot only gets 1/2 full (besides last week) and they try to control every single blade of grass. I miss the north lots.

Vote with your dollars guys. Tell JP you are not donating anymore unless it changes. I bet it will change.

Better yet, email JP and let link him to this thread. I am sure he would be interested to know that he has complete d-bags upsetting his customers.

He would probably find it even MORE intresting that one of those d-bags proudly wears a suckeye hat every day.

I just received an email from Nick Britton who is the Assistant Athletics Director - Events Management answering the question of what is allowed. This is what he said.

"An open fire is any fire that is not in a cooking grill."

So you can have a fire, just keep it in a grill. Buy a cheap charcoal grill start a fire in it, if anyone gives you trouble with it, pull out a hot dog.

I think I personally know the guy you are talking about. He works for ISU parking division?

He has caused problems like this in the past. He has no people skills and he is a little too "by the book", which means parking loves him.

CST8WIN, if this is the guy, IM me and I can give you tips on how to deal with him.

Oh, open firepits are not allowed in parking lots. It has to do with a safety issue, however, must of the security/parking people know where to pick their battles.

I know the DB your talking about. He's the same crackhead that even though the parking lot never gets more then a 1/3 full makes sure that everyone parks so there is barely enough room to pull out if you leave before everyone else and makes it impossible to have a tent with them a-holes making sure you follow their 'pack em in like sardines' rule. I got the bastard this last week though as they got a little lax in making sure people pulled all the way up. I pulled up to the white line and stopped with no one in front of me. We got out and went walking just as the DB comes over and makes us all pull up. I kept walking and they didn't know who's truck was not parked right. We walked down and talked to some friends until the next row was filled up and then came back and actually had some room to tailgate. What that guy needs is a good *** whoopin.

I actually got ticked off at the parking guy and told him to call the cops on me. I told him to ask for a few of the guys that I personally know (and have for like 10 years). He didn't call anyone, but he wouldn't leave us alone. He SWORE at me and I went over to the other guys and asked for the supervisor. Some old guy who got ticked he had to get out of his truck came over. I told him that we are DONORS and not the student lot and they needed to have a little more respect. I also told him we had no problems in D-2 with anything we have been having problems with this year in G7. I have been too busy to e-mail anyone yet. But, I have the guys card and am planning on sending an e-mail to Pollard about the treatment of Donors in G7. I was so mad that some punk *** 20 year old thinks he can cuss at me and get away with it as a parking guy. I'm sorry, but they are being ridiculous and it needs to stop! I don't need to park so close to people that I can barely open my car door and don't have any room to tailgate.
