It's not that tough to fry fish, just do it yourself. You don't even need a deep frier. I used to get catfish nuggets from Hy-Vee, bread them and pan fry them all the time and they were delicious.

That's totally not the point of a fish fry. Most places that have these, do it as a fund raiser. My wife and I were talking at our local fish fry (put on by the American Legion post in town), she grew up in a city, I in small towns. She never remembered going to a fish fry, but for us...Not during lent: We'd regularly fry our own fish...during lent: all the towns around had their own Friday night for the fish fry, and we'd hit one every Friday of lent. They were/are about building community...in 2 ways: By supporting the organization that was putting it on, and by shooting the bull with people. No matter what town in the area was having the fish fry, my dad would find someone to BS with for an hour or so, and the kids would explore/hang out/etc.

Edit: Thinking about it, the only thing that bummed me out about the fish fry on Friday night was that I only knew one other person there besides my wife...which told me that after almost 2 years living in this town, we haven't gotten to know enough people....in my defense, though, we got there right when it started (we had stuff to do later) so it was mainly us and the bluehairs.

My favorite part of lent is having an excuse to eat all the seafood I can. Oh yeah and McD's Fish Fillets!!

There's no shame in that. If you arrive later you could potentially be waiting in line for over an hour.

Ahhh yes. The oldest conspiracy theory in the world.

No meat on Fridays, only fish. Jesus had several fishermen as his Disciples.

Coincidence . . . ????

:jimlad:

Admittedly you had the jimlad, but not eating meat was a creation of the 800's, well after the fishermen disciples would profit.

This. Are Catholics the only ones to not eat meat during Ash Wednesday and Fridays in Lent?

No, others can opt to do it, too, but I think it's just more of a formal "thing" in Catholic churches. I know people who give up lots of different things for Lent.

McDonald's fish sandwiches are so good. My wife hates fish but loves 'em too. Her philosophy - would you like some fish with your tartar sauce?
