That teams need was a center. That year Shirley was serviceable and Rancik was more of a forward (and got hurt). Cato and Homan make the most sense in the last 25 years of Iowa State.

Swap Izzo for Eustachy. It wasn't the players it was the coaches. Izzo simply outcoached Eustachy and would have taken the Cyclones to the title as easily as the Spartans.

Cato would be a great option for that team. Shot blocker and didn't need to have offense flow through him.

A name I haven't seen mentioned based on pure talent is Craig Brackins. Taller post to compliment Fizer's bulk. IMO Fizer and Brackins have similar/complimentary offensive skillsets.

My 2nd choice would be a big time 3 point shooter like McGee or Babb.
