Ford getting out of the car game (basically)

The luxury full sized pickup has replaced the sports car as the vehicle of choice for the overcompensating man. I could really stand to have one for house and landscaping projects, but they are so damn expensive. It's unbelievable how many quad cabs are cruising around with a bed cover that never comes up until they have to get the suitcase and diaper bag out during a weekend trip to grandmas.

Yep. People replaced their sports car or luxury car with a luxury truck.

I'm a truck guy so it doesn't bother me that much, but the ones that amaze me are the guys running around down here in texas with 3/4 ton, crew cab, long bed trucks that clearly don't get used for anything more serious than hauling a stroller or their kids bike. That's a serious piece of hardware that doesn't ride that well until you've got a bunch of weight in the back.

As far as Ford getting out, it's disappointing. I always thought the focus was a good car. They are just pulling cars out of the US market though right? I think they do pretty well in Europe.

Interesting take on the move. They note that some of things we are calling crossovers are more hatchback sedan than SUV. Really more "car" than SUV based.

People are often surprised how much can fit in a small car. The other day I bought some metal edging that came in 6 foot strips. Once I got outside of HD I freaked out a little wondering if they would fit in my tiny car. They fit perfectly after I googled "How to fold down seats". Pretty sad that I didn't know but who puts the rear seat release in the trunk?

I'm guessing that Dodge is going to like this move. There are a ton of Ford cop cars that I'm guessing will become Dodge Chargers.

I notice that I'm getting some Chevy ads on CF now. Nice try big brother! :)

In other news, Chevy is going to start building $80k luxury sedans but they are only going to charge $25k for them and they are going to be called Malibu.

Yeah I think a lot would probably just buy more Explorer's.

The Explorer. Now there's a sweet ride.

Test drove one. It had a massaging driver's seat and some kind of collision detection system for the entire parameter of the vehicle.

But to me a "truck" is still something like a 1976 Chevy Silverado that beat the living daylights out of you. A punishing ride.

My 2004 Xterra fits that mold. It's man against truck. The way God intended

My girlfriend had a Honda Civic when we started dating. I'm 6' 3" and if we took her car on a trip longer than an hour or two, my knees would start bothering me. I don't have knee issues and this is the only time they would bother me.

We bought her an SUV a few years later (Nissan Murano). Knee issues vanished, can drive as long as I want now without issue. I would prefer to have a car that got better mileage, but I won't trade it for the SUV comfort.

Comparing a compact car to a SUV isn't really an apples to apples comparison. Drive a Nissan Maxima or Altima and you would have just as much knee room.

Fit these four large tires and rims into an Audi A5 couple yesterday. Eyeballing it you would think, nope but they fit. Only downside was wrestling them in and out with a bad rotator cuff sucked.

The pickup is similar in price as the sports car, but license plates are a heck of a lot less. $65/year for a 3 ton or less pickup vs. 1% of sales price on the sports car. So that 40k sports car is going to cost you $400 a year to license.
