This quote says it all for tonight. This team has so much talent but what i was concerned about was all the studs that he brought in with jones, nader, etc that had been the stars in other programs would they be willing to give up the ball and make the extra pass to get an easy shot for someone else. it sorta shown tonight with only 8 assists

It's also hard to get assists when the ball does not go thru the net. They go from assists to passes really fast.

Probably a pretty good description for last night. The night before was fine, so I'm not too worried about them figuring it out. Fred is brilliant and analyzing just what is going on and adjusting accordingly. I also think that we missed a lot of shots that we normally make, and they were sagging inside and giving us open looks, but we couldn't make them pay for it with our threes.

Defensively, we're just not where we want to be, but a McKat behind the defense would have helped tremendously, as Georges is just not the guy that you need in the middle when the lose their man, as he's not a shot blocker, and we can't afford foul trouble for him. Definitely spent part of the night wishing he was eligible for this type of game.

I know many of you don't remember from his days as a Clone that when the game got tough, Tinsley would forget his role and start playing every position, never passing off and shooting everything.

The moral of the story is that when you play Hoiball, you win. When you play Tinsley-ball, you don't.

That said, Fred needs to sit their butts down if they don't play with and for each other. And I don't care who it is. There's enough depth on the bench. No one is indispensable.

My observations from last night were that we continued to make those extra passes for the first couple of minutes. We couldn't make a damn shot though. Once the shooting went cold, I think they each tried to take it upon themselves to break the slump.

This may be the dumbest thing I have read in a long, long time.

Anyway...we will be fine. When you introduce this many new players into a system every year you will have hiccups. We will get it figured out by the end of the year and be fine.

Yeah Jamaal Tinsley didn't win very much as a clone. The best pg to ever play at Iowa State and it isn't even close.

It is not fair to put the blame on BDJ. For the first time ever, I saw several occasions where Monte was more focused on trying to score then pass. Also, when do you ever see him get 4 fouls? He was just trying too hard last night and it got him out of sync. Plus Hogue had an off night. So all of that adds up to a loss.

There were games like this last year too. The team just needs to figure out its rhythm. I don't think there is a coincidence that this happened at about the time we added 2 new players into the rotation. The same type of thing could happen when JM becomes eligible. People are still trying to figure out how their roles complement each other.

Their size threw us out of rhythm offensively and that's about all there is to it. It will help having McKay in a few weeks. Other than that, it was just a bad night.

It's not a good loss. Maryland is projected to finish in the middle of the Big 10 and they are much younger than us. Can we learn something from this loss absolutely, but we basically have two more chances in our non-conference to notch a quality win.

That explains the rest of your post. There was a little hero ball last night but it really only came as a result of absolutely no shots falling. Guys got rushed and may have forced things at times but I don't think any one player tried to do too much. In fact last night we saw guys being a little tentative after their shots weren't falling.

Still the bottom line is, Maryland is a solid team IMO. They have good guards and a lot of length. This game reminded me a lot of the UCONN game.

I don't know if it was as much "not playing for each other" as it was panicking. Last year's team was great because they never panicked. They played their game and the vast majority of games worked out in the end. Tonight, I saw people do a lot of uncharacteristic things. Hoisting threes out of rhythm, taking it in to 2-3 defenders and not kicking it out. Hogue tried to do way too much under the hoop, and Georges made some head scratching plays. I think they just got behind the 8 ball a little bit and tried to get it all back in a play or two.

I am concerned defensively. People seem to think McKay will be the end-all-be-all to solve or defensive woes. I can handle getting outmuscled down low, as it's a natural trade off for having smaller, more skilled offensive bigs. However, I can't figure out how a team predicated on being smaller and quicker can be so bad on the ball. In watching last night, I didn't see a ton of situations where McKay was going to make a huge difference. Most of the time they were getting open threes, or finishing mid-range floaters. We have to get better guarding the ball.
