It's actually surprising that this hasn't happened sooner with this type of recruiting philosophy. Fred's been fortunate up to this point that his previous teams have all bought in.

I am a bit surprised there wasn't more issues with Kane but there wasn't very much adversity for him to deal with. At least until he didn't get drafted.

I guess we should be losing with HS players like Iowa does. He is right. We should take some notes from Fran. If you are going to lose by missing shots, you might as well do it with HS players.

Iowa is great at this method.

Ah, the old "transfers are problem people" mindset. Nice idea if true, but fails in reality. Unless, of course, talented players don't` want to play for your team.

You mean like in 2011 with Chris Allen? I have patience because it will probably take more time than last year which seemed to happen pretty quickly. I think having 3 guys come in while the season is in progress will not help anything either.

Yeah Jamaal Tinsley didn't win very much as a clone. The best pg to ever play at Iowa State and it isn't even close.

My buddy named his kid, Tinsley Wright... dude was $$ but he did lose at Drake. I was there I think it was his first game as a Clone, possibly 2nd semester guy.... Cant really remember but he is one of my all time favs...

Lolol dumb post is dumb. It has happened before, see Drake in Royce's year. Good teams lose early all the time in college basketball.

Last season we could have easily lost 2-4 games in the non-con. Iowa, BYU and Boise State come to mind. But the ball bounced our way every time. Then, we paste Baylor....Drew says he thinks we are a NC caliber team....we get cocky and proceed to stink up the month of January. What I saw against Maryland was that cocky team all full of themselves and the pre-season hype. Now after the ball didn't bounce their way, and getting knocked down a peg, will this team respond like last year?

This was a team effort of playing "not for each other". I would argue strongly with anyone who would characterize our play as selfish. I saw guys having the confidence to try and make the big shot to get the Clones back in the game. The problem was it was all one-on-one moves off the dribble leading to difficult shots. A lot of times we make those shots, but against MD we couldn't buy a basket. I can recall one or two bad shots by each of our top 7. Edozie being the only guy I wouldn't include. We needed more passing and less dribble.

We need to get more figured out on defense. We are missing a bigger, physical outside defender. We have been spoiled with Bibbs and Kane. Bryce and Naz have the length, but struggled against Wells and Bama's big wing. The other area where we need to improve is rebounding. We are undersized, so guys like Niang, Nader, Hogue, DeJean Jones and Thomas have to block out.

The only guy who I would call out in the MD game was Hogue. He is a senior and needs to show more leadership. MD's physical play got in his head and impacted his game. His last couple fouls were very chippy and a result of him losing his cool.

Wow, still have this philosophy huh. 4 games into the year with a coach that has proven that he knows what he is doing, and Hawk fans are still hoping that the transfer thing blows up in Fred's face? Sad, worry about your **** show that will steadily decline over time.

I know many of you don't remember from his days as a Clone that when the game got tough, Tinsley would forget his role and start playing every position, never passing off and shooting everything.

Apparently you don't recall Tinsley's years either. Those were some of the most prolific years of MBB at ISU. When Tinsley (if) did something like that it was called taking over the game and resulted almost exclusively in a "W".

The moral of the story is that when you play Hoiball, you win. When you play Tinsley-ball, you don't.

Uh, Tinsley ball won a lot his stats were:

99/00- 11.0 PPG, 5.1 REBS, 6.6 ASTS, 32.8 MINS
00/01- 14.3 PPG, 3.8 REBS, 6.0 ASTS, 32.2 MINS

and ISU won like 57 games in his two years. Call that whatever you want, but it was not selfish losing basketball.

The irrationality of people and the focus on who graduated the year before in college athletics baffles me.

People graduate every single year, and they are usually your best players.

This is not unique to ISU and it doesn't prevent us from winning this year.

*****. Will. Buff. Out.

This quote says it all for tonight. This team has so much talent but what i was concerned about was all the studs that he brought in with jones, nader, etc that had been the stars in other programs would they be willing to give up the ball and make the extra pass to get an easy shot for someone else. it sorta shown tonight with only 8 assists

As I reflect back on the 2013-2014 season, it seems to me that the Cyclone’s warrior like mentality may have lost a few battles, but their mental toughness allowed them to win the all-important war. Unfortunately, mental toughness did not seem to be the definitive description I would apply to the CBE Hall of Fame Classic finals. I know that offense puts people in the stands and defense wins games, but what I saw seemed to be a bit more like deer caught in the second half headlights.

That said, diversity doesn't build character, it reveals it and I am confident this team is full of players ready to pay the price to make their dreams become reality!

I could be worm but didn't he lead the team in blocks both years as well?

This team will find its own identity. It can't think about last year. That was last year. Give this team a little bit more time to gel and they'll be fine. Fred has shown the ability to get his teams to play significantly better as the season wears on. I have no reason to doubt that now.

I think this was a great game for us to play early in the season. We will learn alot from that loss IMO. This is why the teams that want to be major factors come postseason play schedule difficult games very early, so they can identify areas to improve & work on them. When it comes to top of the key ball screens on defense, we have a lot to work on in that area as well as others, but that one stands out the most.

And on offense, obviously we will have to play differently on offense without a guy like Deandre who could get in the lane at will.

I would like to add that Teurgeon is no slouch of a coach. Going against a guy like that is going to test you. Very encouraged with the fight in our guys at the end of the game. I hope we had a great week of practice thus far.
