I had a debate with someone last night about the local talk radio shows. My take:

1. Murph & Andy - By 2pm, all of yesterday's sports have been beat to death so I like the "and more" of their show
2. Out of Bounds (1700) - I can't believe I'm ranking them second but since they got rid of the Round Guy, Garmin and Cotlar actually have some chemistry together and they get good guests. I don't listen everyday but when I do, its usually pretty decent.
3. Matt & Miller - These 2 have to be on air together to be tolerable. Solo shows for both are brutal. But they play well together and outside of their antics of trying to blow up a non-story, overall the show can be decent at times.
4. Travis & Tim - I've been giving them chance after chance to entertain me but their show is like watching paint dry...boring, no knew takes, and they just don't seem to work well together. I still listen for 10 minutes on my way to work but I find myself switching to Mike & Mike more often.
5. Marty Tirrell - I'll admit I haven't listen to his show much since he went to 1700 but when I did, it was the same crap he put out on 1460.

Side Note: Miller & Deace blew all of these out of the water.

As for national shows, Dan Patrick is a must for me everyday. I do like the SVP show too but don't get to listen that much.

My honest opinion right now:

1. Murph and Andy - great variety and good guests
2. Marty Tirrell - his topics just seem to really interest me
3. Matt & Miller
4. Travis and Tim: Travis never lets Tim speak and Travis says "um" about 6000 times each morning.
5. Out of Bounds

1. (by a looooong shot) Murph and Andy. These guys are funny.
2. Static between stations on the dial
3. Cot-man and Gar-man (they suck, but just less than the rest)
4. Marty
5. Travis and Tim. Travis is actually pretty good, but Tim is terrible. He has one of the worst voices in all of radio. Additionally, his use of "its funny" gets old fast.
6. Matty P and Miller. Miller is a very good sidekick, too bad he has been paired with two complete *********

Mine:

1 - Matt & Miler Great mix of national & local guests. Not to mention they aren't the kool-aid drinking, butt kissing hosts that people want (funny that's what Out of Bounds is and people cann't stand the show) and I like that...tell it like it is and have a strong opinion.
2 - Tirrell - Only negatives is that they dive into too much high school sports for me and when Marty is traveling and his co-hosts are flying solo, it's brutual to listen to.
3 - Travis & Tim
t4 - Murph & Andy - don't care for their sthick, if I want high school comedy, i'll listen to Bob & Tom.
t4 - Out of Bounds - Any show that has Larry Cotlar deserves to be ranked last or in this case, tied for last.

1. Matt and Miller. They know sports, and they know how to p*ss people off. Perfect combination for sports talk radio.
2. Marty Tirrell. See number one. Only I question his knowledge of sports. But he sure is entertaining.
3. Keith and Andy. Kinda bland, but refreshing if you're sick of radio guys who think they need to shout, whine and belittle people to make sports talk radio work.
4. Cotlar and Garman. A little like 3. Good guys and solid guests.
5. Travis and Tim. The few times I've listened, they seemed like they were trying too hard to be funny, but they weren't.

1. Murph and Andy: wish I could listen to them more but usually busy working at 2pm. every time I do though it's easily the best stuff on right now
2. Matt and Miller: while I know people here hate Matt I think of all the shows they bring in the best guests and cover a larger variety of topics including non-local sports.
3. Travis and Tim: they aren't bad, Travis is definitely the better personality of the 2
4. Out of Bound w/ Garmin & Cotlar: they are hit or miss when I actually do hear their show. sometimes they are pretty stale and bland just like Cotlar's morning show used to be
5. Marty: still can't stand him and the very few times I have actually listened to his show I find myself changing the channel pretty quickly. would rather listen to music than hear his whiny voice on the air.

1. Murph & Andy: They just keep it entertaining and have a soft spot for a certain "other" Cyclone web site.

2. Marty: He has improved since starting a nationally syndicated show with Bob Ryan and has moved away from using the baseless rumors as much. Even apologized when he mentioned trouble in Drake basketball and everyone assumed it was Phelps (in reality it was the women's coach)

3. Matt and Miller: Mainly by default but Ken is still pretty top notch.

4. Out of Bounds

5. Travis and Tim: Ugh.

I agree with your order. I think if Chris Hassel had his own show he would be toward the top if not at the top. I like listening to him when he fills in.

Miller and Deace Reign Supreme

1. Murph & Andy - straight up sports comedy.
2. and 3. Matt & Miller - Their no-nonsense and "hot" topics make the drive home fun. Matt actually attends regional sporting events, for most schools his listeners care about and having Miller be 'the bookie' is really quite an interesting angle

4. Marty Tirrell - I can't stand him, his voice, his hawk homerism. enough.
5. Travis & Tim - This is the worst tripe on the radio. They lost me for good when they pledged not to break down the college bowl season "just like everyone else". So what you're saying is you're parrots without an original thought? Flush this garbage

Honest question -- does Travis and Tim talk Iowa all the time?

The only reason I am asking is I don't get a chance to listen to any of the local sports talk shows too much, but I thought it was strange that it was all Iowa when I listened Travis and Tim at four different times in the last three months.

Travis' Twitter name is huskerhawkeye, so don't expect to get much ISU out of them.

Murphy and Andy.

And for the love of God, will someone please yank Perrault off the air? That guy is a complete idiot.

Rather than rank them I'll just offer that I think Larry Cotlar sucks. He has to be the worst interviewer of all time. His questions are leading (at a minimum) and worse, he frickin answers the question before the interviewee responds. -- Drives me crazy. That, and his Drake job overshadows his objectivity. I listen, but the show definitely improves when he's on the road with his Bulldogs.

I kind of like Marty but his over-the-top, antagonist, make-news, routine does get old. If he would temper that some, he's smart and has some good insight.

Murph&Andy: The best. Funny and have a good sense of what to discuss.

Can not listen to Tim/Travis. Tim sounds like he belongs on a San Franscisco station. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

1. Murph & Andy
2. Out of Bounds - haven't caught it much, but at this point in the rankings, less negatives is a good thing.
t3. Matt & Miller- unless they're talking to huskers.
t3. Marty - I never would've thought I'd start listening to him again, but gotta have something to flip to when M&M are talking huskers, creighton, or boston.
5. Mike & Mike commercial breaks
6. TnT- Yes, that means I don't even flip it to KXNO when Mike & Mike go to commercial anymore...

I agree with your top two:

1. Murphy and Andy
2. Out of Bounds

After that, all are GAWD AWFUL HORRIBLE and not worthy of even being ranked.

t3. Matt & Miller- unless they're talking to huskers.

at least when they talkk huskers its indepth about a local mid west team, and about football... its not like they are talking husker basketball... god the morning show will spend 60 minutes on how to tivo, or quilting... i wish they would talk about the huskers..

all those that bash matt do so on personality that they perseive he has.. he is good at his job, and fills his air time perfectly.... they have great guests, and always, always talk sports....

ps and when they discus things they dont act like the listeners are novices when it comes to everything... example gambling, and vegas, recruiting...

thats why i liked steve deace... he knows something about everything, or has an opinion... Tim basically hasnt watched a new movie since 1970 but they discuss things like the oscars.

deace probaly has watched every movie made since then. just more enjoyable when the hosts know or think they know everything about everything.
