"It's a Wonderful Life" is the most depressing movie and I don't know why people insist on watching it at Christmas time. I hate it.

I thought I heard once that the movie wasn't popular when released but caught on much later. Maybe because James Stewart became a bigger star.

So I watched most of titanic a few weeks ago (I missed the first hour and the final door scene because it’s like 5 hours on tv) and Billy Zane’s character Cale absolutely should have died during the sinking of the titanic. There was absolutely no good reason to keep him alive. He’s a fictional character, so you didn’t need to keep him alive for historical accuracy. Titanic is also not a gritty period drama, so you don’t need to keep him alive to make some grand point about how the wealthy bad guys actually do win (and the writers had him commit suicide off screen so clearly there was supposed to be some kind of karmic justice). The rest of the movie was very well done, but that was a mistake

Touched on this last week but Jack is so annoying I'm killing him off at the 'King of the World' scene.

I realize you don't have a movie but I don't care.

It wasn't a big box office hit but was a massive critical success. It was up for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor that year.

Jimmy Stewart was fresh from the war. He was battling PTSD. The scene where he yells at the kids and knocks over stuff seemed to show true anger.

The bar scene is amazing. When he prays. I'm really not sure that was acting. Plus it was hella hot and he was sweating which added to the drama.

It's a Wonderful Life is a goddam masterpiece

Ha, thanks for the correction. I'm not sure what I was thinking about.

Probably because it’s on.

My dad loves watching it’s a wonderful life at Christmas, but I think it’s because he first saw it on tv when he was young and there was a snowstorm so he couldn’t get home for Christmas. So it probably has a very specific feel. And it is a good message.

I think you were half right (although @dahliaclone please correct me if I’m wrong). I heard that it wasn’t very successful at the box office so when NBC was looking for something to show at Christmas (which was decades later) they were able to buy the rights for pretty cheap

The absolute creepiness of most all Disney princess movies is just kind of glossed over and I'm troubled by it. You can't just kidnap people, Beast. You can't get married when you are 14, Ariel. Locking your kid in a dungeon is child abuse, whatever-the-hell Rapnunzel's mom's name is.

Tangled is arguably the best modern Disney princess movie (although Merida is a better role model).

A Christmas Story is boring as hell, and I haven't the faintest idea how it so captured people's imaginations that it deserves a full day to itself on TV every year.

I find it just okay - not quite that bad, but it is not my favorite Christmas movie by far.

Marvel movies are trash overall.

Every movie follows the same basic structure: there’s a villain, who is usually some sort of super-powered being or alien, and they want to do something bad. The heroes have to team up to stop them. This formula gets old fast, and it’s not helped by the fact that the majority of Marvel movies are simply not very good. They’re poorly written, with flat characters and uninteresting plots.

I go to these movies opening weekends because I love my better half. But I would walk out of almost all of them if I could. I also say this fully knowing maybe I am just too old for them...if I was younger maybe I'd like them.

Goodfellas is meh

and speaking of Scorcese, he's absolutely right that Marvel movies aren't real cinema.
Totally agreed with Marty when he said that and he compared them to theme parks which is spot on. This is a great article about big time directors saying WHY they aren't Marvel fans. Some of them even have been asked to be a director for one and turned it down.
