Friday OT - Bucket List

Since I was a little kid watching it on tv, I'd always wanted to go see the CMA Awards in person. In 2010 and 2011 I did, first on my own, then with a friend after describing how fun it was (we watched some of the red carpet arrivals, too). I was hoping for another appearance by Barbara Mandrell in 2010 since she'd been honored in 2009 for her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame on the broadcast that year. But no such luck.

We went to Italy in 2018 on a food and wine tour through Turino, Rapallo, Bologna, and Verona. I'd never been to Europe before and always wanted to go just about anywhere to experience something different than what North America offers. While it was hot AF that week, time has erased the discomfort we remembered and what remains is all the fantastic food, historic buildings, and the fun people we got to meet, both on the tour with us and locals who helped us experience the sights, sounds, and tastes.

I was able to host my own radio show for three years. It was just on KURE, but it was a lot of fun to be able to play what I wanted and to share some more obscure tunes I loved with those who wouldn't likely be familiar. Always thought it would be cool to have that opportunity to be on-the-air and I was fortunate enough to get it.

I'm not a religious guy but I watched the movie The Way once and ever since have thought it would be really cool to walk the Camino de Santiago solo.

Most of my bucket list items are travel related...

*Visit all 50 states (6 left: VT, NH, ME, CT, RI, MA)

*Visit all 13 Canadian provinces & territories (have been to Alberta, BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario)

We're making a swing through New England and some of the maritime provinces late next spring that will finish off our US states and add New Brunswick, PEI, and Nova Scotia, coming through Quebec on our way back. So we'll just have the territories and Newfoundland/Labrador left after that. Those might be a bit of a tough sell as spouse doesn't like the cold as much as I do.

*Visit all 7 continents. We have 5 so far - North America (duh!) South America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania (Australia & surrounding island countries).

Next January we will be visiting Egypt and Jordan so Africa is coming up. Jordan will be the west end of Asia (we visited our marine in Okinawa, so that was the eastern end). I'm working on Antarctica before we're too decrepit to make the trip, but once again it's a tough sell. I have a girlfriend that might go with me, though.

Finally, crazy as it sounds - I want to set foot in the Arctic and Antarctic circles. I've stood on the equator in Ecuador, might as well balance that out.

I finally got to see Rush more than once on a tour. I'd seen every tour since the late 80s once, usually in Kansas City, one time in Omaha.

I had purchased tickets for the R40 tour stop in Kansas City. Mrs. Joe4Cy surprised me on my birthday with 3 tickets(!) for myself and my brothers at the final show of the tour in Los Angeles. About halfway through the show, I'm balling my eyes out, knowing it's the last time I'd see this band perform. Bucket list check.

Want to go scuba diving in the kelp forest off Southern California.

We're still trying to figure that out. Despite being retired, we are having trouble syncing our schedules with the friend going with us.

If you like history... London is the place.

At St. Paul's you can stand basically within feet of Nelson, Churchill, and Wellington's graves simultaneously. It's remarkable.

It honestly is awe-inspiring. I keep trying to convince @Mr Janny that he would like it, as he is a huge history buff!

I go to the UK 4-5 times a year for work. London is great and I enjoy my time working and visiting there. But the rest of the UK is so interesting. I’ve travelled to all corners of England and eastern Wales and none of it disappoints.

If you go back spend 3 days to properly do London but spend a week using the train system and stay in rooms above pubs in the rural areas. You won’t regret it!

So, this is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. My daughter and I are tentatively planning a 10 to 12 day trip sometime in the next couple of years. I was figuring three or four days for London, a couple of days in Edinburgh, then the Bath area. I am a huge Jane Austen fan, love Brit lot - and you can rent an AirBnB where she once lived.

Then Stonehenge, etc are on the way back to London!

It is lovely. If you ever go, do yourself a huge favor and apply online well in advance for tickets to the Necropolis. I have been lucky enough to get in twice. It is amazing.

Somewhat related, I'm reading "A Pilgrimage to Eternity" by Timothy Egan right now. He walked the Via Francigena years ago and this book details his trip. Might be worth a read if you're into that. I wouldn't categorize myself as especially religious either, I just happened into this book because I'd read a bunch of his other books.

I haven't been to the Vatican in around 20 years, but when we went we were required to wear dresses that reached below our knees, cover our shoulders, and cover our heads when entering St Peter's basilica and the Sistine chapel. Is that still the case?

It doesn't still have to be a dress, but you do have to cover your shoulders and can't show a lot of leg. I think there are people who show up in tank tops anyway, if I remember, but it's a little more relaxed.

We skipped the kids & are working on the grandkids. In retrospect, that might have been a mistake. There are sixteen grandkids, and only six kids.
