Thanks so much to @JP4CY for this thread topic! I am going to paste as is because it explains it best:

Have you heard how much some of the Taylor Swift concert tickets have been going for?

What's something you've spent way above retail price to get?

Testifying
My first MP3 player was stupid expensive. I wanted to be able to trade mp3s, put schoolwork on the stick, etc. This exact one:

Behind you
Back in high school, I was saving every dime I had to buy a $1,000 telescope but then I saw this hot girl at the mall who'd worn her mom's suede outfit to a party and had red wine spilled on it, it was going to cost $1,000 to clean it so I offered to pay as long as she'd pretend to be my girlfriend for a month.

Lost all my money and was scorned by pretty much everyone when she spilled the beans on the deal, but it worked out in the end.

Not exactly sure.
I bought Vikings/packers tickets for my oldest sons birthday. Pretty good seats and a pretty good price.

I feel very accomplished to have paid face value for absolute nosebleeds but I'll tell you what, lower level/floor probably would have been worth some of those nuts prices if you were a big fan

Each service isn’t a lot of money, but we have way too many streaming services for the amount of television we watch.

We have Amazon Prime but that is basically free since we have Prime for shopping and use that a lot. We have watched several things on this. Probably more than most services we pay extra for.

We have free Peacock. Never use that.

We have ESPN+ and frequently have used that but certainly not this time of year. Love to be able to watch more college women’s sports.

We have Disney bundled with that. I will occasionally pull up a movie on that for noise and we watch the Marvel content.

We have Netflix and rarely watch it.

We got Max for Game of Thrones. Watch other stuff once in a blue moon.

We should be more careful and just sign up when something drops and then cancel for a while, but we are just lazy about it.

I have always been a fan of buying the better stuff because it lasts longer. My wife is a fan of saving money and buying the cheap stuff. In summary, I now mostly buy the cheap stuff.

I'm in the middle of this kind of stuff.

I don't feel a need to buy the $600 tent, but the REI brand tents are worth it for lasting even if they're more expensive than Coleman.

Same with other outdoor gear.

The biggest problem I've had is if I delve into a new hobby, I buy way too many unnecessary accessories. Like for fly tying I bought all sorts of different materials and now I just tie on some dog hair or feathers and tinsel because fish are really, really stupid.

NWTF Legacy Lamp. We were at an NWTF banquet in the early 2000s. My husband said he wanted the Legacy Lamp with the father and son sculpture that was auctioned off. He found out if I start bidding, I'm going home with it.

Honestly, I'm super cheap, like my father before me. I don't know if I've ever overpaid like that?

Maybe an overp beer at a baseball game would qualify. But I hated paying it.

About 10 years ago I bought 2 tickets to a Josh Groban concert for my mother's birthday. My mother is a HUGE fan, so she was excited to go. What I actually did is I surprised her buy buying the VIP package all access thing. Needless to say that when we got to the venue she was blown away and couldn't believe it. I'm pretty sure I was her favorite son that year. That same year, for a Christmas present I gave her a small scrapbook of the pictures I took at the show.

In 2016, I paid $200 for a single, 300-level seat for Taylor Swift in Des Moines. It was worth every penny. And even though I was flying solo, I made a temporary friend in my seat neighbor, who had also gone to the show alone.

Back in 2003, a friend and I went to a meet and greet with Justin Timberlake. My bestie bought it, so I'm not sure what she paid, but I'm confident it was several hundred dollars. And that does not include the tickets we bought for three of his concerts.
