Where did he say it wasn't important. It is important to get the right hire. What he said was that it wasn't priority No. 1 at this point, and it isn't, nor should it be. He needs to focus on putting together the recruiting class and that is taking up his time right now. He has only been on the job for one month. He isn't the only one who doesn't have a complete staff. It takes time!! If he is still at the same number of staff members at the end of February, I will be worried.

how many former D1 coaches are on this board? If he's not worried, why should I be?

I concur.

Off-topic, my wife and I really appreciate how your wife mentions "Cyclone Fanatics" for the drive-home weather, as opposed to that generic "Basketball fans" that McLaughlin does. Does he realize that the particular broadcast that they put on is for a Hilton crowd?

Oklahoma State, Michigan, and other went much longer without a DC than we have and Miami is without a DC and Shannon is on record saying he may not hire one. Obviously having DC isn't the major priority we make it out to be, especially to defensive coaches who aalready know the system thatthey want. I am as anxiuos as anyone to know who the DC will be, but not concerned.

DC Chris Ash?

No more than a wild flight of imagination, and curiosity, on my part. . . .

Ash's rep among we fans has long been bright up-and-comer, has it not? If he's particularly sharp-minded, perhaps PR will tutor Ash, bring him along, groom him, so to speak, to become the DC.

No reason to unsheath the long knives here, I don't think. Just putting this out in order to get a useful comment or two about Ash the professional coach from people in the know.

We will play defense by choosing formations off a dart board. We will be unpredictable.

We must all be patient and faithful. The Rhoads to victory will not be easy. No? To win in Iowa, you must take the Rhoads less traveled?
Nevermind.

Re: From Rhodes Himself

Hi, BugDoc. I'm one fan to whom it's "no big deal." Why? Because Rhoads says it's no big deal.

I assume PR knows what he needs to do, and I assume he will prioritize those needs as he believes necessary. I believe these things because Rhoads is a professional, and because I have no professional standing by which to critique his decisions.

Evidently, Rhoads decided - with six coaches on hand (including himself) - it's a better use of his time to spend it recruiting than to split off a good part of the time available to him vetting coaching candidates and making hires.

Who am I to dispute Rhoads's decision? No one. A peon fan. A nobody. I will judge Rhoads' ISU program by what we see on the field, but I'm in no position to evaluate what is the best use of Coach's time as he sees fit when operating out of public view and going about his daily business.

The clock is ticking. The recruiting deadline approaches, 10 days, 9 days, 8 days. . . . Completing staff hires? It can wait, if Rhoads says it can wait. If the idea is to get the best people, players and coaches, and one group has a deadline attached to it and the other doesn't. . . .

JMHO.

That's weird, I think I have always disagreed with your comments but this one could not be any more spot on and those thoughts go through my head everytime I read these threads. He's not worried Joe Schmo from Des Moines or Storm Lake or Cedar Rapids needs to know who the DC is so they can sleep at night, he is obviously more concerned with what is in the best interest of the program he is responsible for.

Let Coach Rhoads do what he's going to do at his pace. Several on this thread have said the same thing in so many words. With one little blip (Price), I think he's done a great job assembling a staff. Our offensive coordinator is top notch. And Rhoads is right - right now he and the staff need to focus on recruiting. I'm excited about Iowa State football!!

Today I listened to KASI 1430 am, I think? They were talking ISU things. I
don't remember who was making these comments, It wasn't John Walters.
He said PR might have his DC hired but he won't make it known until after
signing date. I don't remember the name, but he did mention a guy from
Wisconsin? The question that came up was why wait until that time, and he said the guy wanted the kids he was recruting to go to Wisconsin, where
he was employed when the kids were recruited. This guy sounds like guy
that would be great at ISU.

Partridge would be that guy. Haven't heard anything more than his name used once in a DC wishlist.

Yeah, Partridge would be a good get. He was Director of Operations under Mac and then went on to Pitt to coach DL. Moved on to Wisconsin after a few years there. Graduated from Drake in 95. Florida is his main recruiting area.

Let the kids go to Wisconsin and then sneak out the backdoor? That does not sound very nice to the kids. Must be a Big Ten coach? It just does not have the right feel to the story.....Partidge entrance does not help recruiting with so few defensive coaches on staff. People can say the HC is recruiting but if I was a recruit (and I am not), I would want to know the name of the DC before I committed to a school. Yes, there will be many that come on vblind faith, but there will be others that are swayed such as at Florida knowing a McD or a Charlie Strong was part of their package. Just a comment...

I assume we'll have a DC prior to spring ball. They can't practice until then anyway and Rhoads seems to be the one pounding the pavement in recruiting.
