Sad day.

I saw the name & class & thought I might remember having him (around 2007 or so). Then I saw 'sue the bastards' & it all came rushing back to me. Boring class, but he did make it tolerable.

Ironic that you would just now post this story. Sadly, Larry Curtis just died. He was not only a great professor, lawyer and mayor. He was a true conservative, an exceptional leader and a man you could trust with your life. He’ll be missed by many!

In the 1960's, I had a business law course by Professor Schrampher (Sp?). He also was a character and delighted in quizzing unprepared students. Some students didn't know that he actually wrote the class textbook. He took pleasure in finding one of those students and asking him what he thought of the textbook.

Actually a really good course but you always were nervous about being called upon.

Man that saddens me. As a long time resident of Ames I got to know a lot of the folks around town, Larry included. It makes me more sad he is/was 70. I am reading this thread picturing him as I knew him - a relatively young 50ish guy...

Glad I haven't aged.

RIP The Mayor!

Wanted to start a thread titled, "RIP The Mayor" referring to this joke but decided against it and just bumping this thread.

If I remember correctly Mr. Curtis did not have alot of respect for Ames' finest in law enforcement. I was waiting in line to get into a bar during Veishea and struck up a conversation with him. Did he have a t-shirt saying he was the Mayor ?

Dude took an incredibly dry subject and make it somewhat entertaining to go to class because of his anecdotes and tales. Appreciate professors like that, with a borderline 'legendary' status among ISU Business students to boot.

Thought I'd share a funny story about Fred being called "The Mayor." (Funny to me, anyway.) In college I had a law class that was taught by the former mayor of Ames, Larry Curtis. He's a really nice guy, and was the mayor of Ames during the time of Fred's days at ISU. He told us a story one day about how he lost his finger. He is missing the index finger on one of his hands, and said he had it chopped off by a snow blower after a big snow storm. He told us that he ran into the house and told his wife to call ahead to the hospital and let them know he was on the way and that he had cut his finger off. Well, apparently she didn't say his name, all she said was "the mayor is on his way, he cut his finger off!" When they got to the hospital, a team of doctors and nurses met them at the door, and all of them were relieved to see that it wasn't Fred. He said at that moment he knew who the true Mayor of Ames was. As true now as it was then!

I love how this has exactly 32 likes.

Larry was a good guy, I was in the first class Larry taught at Iowa State in 1973. "Wild Bill" became very ill during Christmas break and they brought Larry in to finish the quarter and he ended up staying.

Great guy. His business law II course was also a lot of fun. I think my class had like 10-12 people in it which made for some great conversations.
