33.3% on the season. I mean, he's not horrible. In a slump right now, and he definitely shouldn't be taking 12 in a game like he did on Saturday, but I'm fine with 4 or 5 any given game.

"I haven't watched the games, but let me create a thread criticizing a player!"
So you think 85% of the shots taken by Gabe should be 3 point attempts?

I thought by using the term "chucking" that folks would understand the bit of hyperbole, but I guess the dumb button is too much fun. Rarely != never, and chucking == bad shot (percentage wise).

Did we collectively forget how much better Gabe is from shorter range on average?

Really I was hoping (by asking the question, even) if someone could help me understand why he's doing that so much lately.

I'm sure next time Gabe has the ball, and he's thinking about chucking a three, this thread will top his mind and he wont take it.

Thank you for saving the season, OP!

Is he taking guarded outside shots with lots of time on the clock?

if you watch, a lot of the time he has to to take it because no else can get a clear look, they are not good enough or confident enough to create anything so Gabe has to step up. Our offense just isn't creating many good looks. Holmes tries to do the same thing, but he is slumping right now as well.

Yep, maybe as many as 1/3 of his three pointers seem to occur in the last few seconds of the shot clock. Our offense is kind of geared to grind out clock, and when we don't get a good look from our actions, someone has to throw it up.

We were at our best when Gabe was shooting with confidence and we need to get back to that version of him if we're going to make noise in March. Of course it works a lot better when he's making them. Unless your last name is Harden, I'm not a huge fan of the step back 3. It seems like Gabe kind of fell in love with that shot after the big make at TCU. If he's looking for my input, which I'm sure he is, I'd like to see to see him shoot fewer step backs unless it's late in the shot clock and it's all we available.

The other factor is that it doesn't seem like anybody has their legs underneath them right now and there's nobody that affects more than a shooter. Gabe in particular defends the opponents best player every night and seldom leaves the floor unless he's in foul trouble. I assume he leads us in minutes played, so I'm not surprised he's slumping in February. All we can hope is that he finds another gear down the stretch. I've had my frustrations with him like anybody else, but the kid is an absolute gamer.

Gabe was shooting lights out until Caleb got hurt. It really changes our offense and the amount of attention Gabe gets. Hopefully we can get Caleb back healthy for the postseason and hopefully that helps Gabe get back in rhythm.

I think it is showing that the team is tired.
Sure Gabe and Grill can both go hot or cold, but both of those guys have played a major role in getting this team to over acheive for the last couple of seasons.

An odd part of me wonders if a quick bow out in the B12 Tournament would be worth the extra rest for the NCAA. (would hate to damage the seed and of course you never really want to enter tournament in a slump... so, catch 22 there)

Agreed. It's one less threat on a team that didn't have that many to start out with.

I'm really hoping the decision to just sit Grill and hopefully get him right both physically and mentally pays dividends.

Hard to imagine much seeding implications from a 4/5 matchup with the strength of this conference

He had a 6 game stretch where he was unconscious. Otherwise he has been shooting less than 30 percent and 25 percent in his last 7. But I agree, someone has to shoot them, but 11 or 12 like the last 2 games, is way too much. Mid-range Gabe needs to make a comeback.

The post is also not so strong that it needs special attention so teams can press the perimeter and it's not exactly Tinsley/Horton/Nurse out there for ability to break things down and create.

I haven't seen the last two games either but prior to that I don't recall many good, in rhythm looks for anyone really.

Gabe is who is he is at this point. That's okay. He's a mostly inefficient shooter who has some games where's he's really hot and can carry the team.

But he's been better this year at a lot more of the little things on offense, and honestly, who else is gonna shoot the ball? He's also obviously a strong leader and maybe the single biggest key to the turnaround over the past couple years, the dude is tough as nails.

Ideally though, we're not asking guys who haven't been efficient to become efficient in easily the best conference in the country moving forward and especially at the guard spots. Lipsey will be a rock for the next few years IMO, and AFAIK Grill will be back. College basketball is a guard's game, though, and I'd love to see more emphasis on the offensive end this transfer season for those spots. Easier said than done, but ISU has a TON to sell this offseason for that kind of role specifically.
