We just haven’t been aggressive playing our style of bball lately. Working the bball around and inside out. Don’t think it’s just a Gabe thing. Everyone needs to be more active. Maybe an effect of teams pressuring us and turning us over. Injuries have probably been a factor too. Definitely settling for outside shots too much.

the team has gone through at least 3 cycles of "what's our main action" due to injuries and T King.

Still feel that PnR with Lipsey and Osun as 1a or 1b action could free up a lot. Not smart enough to know what opposing coaches are doing from a scheme standpoint, other than I know they're content to funnel our offense through BRE anytime he steps on the floor.
I'd like to see more of it, but Lipsey being as little of a threat as he is to pull the trigger if you just sag under the screen makes it more difficult.

Still, would like to see more of it overall, and especially next year when you're gonna have an excellent pick and pop threat like Milan out there. I'd actually like to see Jaz involved in that action, too.

People have PTSD from the incredibly lazy PnR action Prohm loved but I do think it could help shake free some good looks when the motion isn't doing it.

Unfortunately Gabe is taking the shots he is getting. The problem is that at this point he, Jaz and Holmes are the only guys that you would want to shoot a 3 pointer, and he is the only one that I feel can create those outside shots. If Lipsey was even marginal it would help a lot. Not sure why he struggles so much from 3, because he seems pretty solid at the FT line, and from 12 feet in. TJ just needs to figure out how to get better shots for the guys he has. Not an easy task. Honestly, ISU is probably the least talented team in the Big 12. It is amazing that they are in the position they are.

It's pretty simple, they just don't move the ball as well without Grill out there. Even if Grill isn't hitting, he's moving a lot and the defense has to stick to him. Without good ball movement or anyone that can really drag defenders away from the paint, Gabe and Holmes can't get good looks inside or outside. Also, the defense doesn't click as well without Grill out there, so, the other team scoring more leads to more desperation for our guys on offense.

I’ve said this in the past but Grill is the QB of the offense and defense. He knows every position, he directs traffic, he sees when someone is about to mess up and works his ass to go and cover the mistake up. Keep resting him.

It's hard to work the ball inside out when your biggest post threat is meandering near the 3 point line setting lateral screens.

I'm not sure why or how that started, but Osun needs to be living on the block, only setting screens when we are using him to roll off, get to the basket, and create easy ops (for him or teammates). He's really the one guy who can truly soften up the defense, force teams to collapse, and really open things up for shooters/ and inside outside game. Rob is trying but he's limited, and the only other player that can score in the post is King.

It's nice hitting threes, but our best games are those where we dominate scoring in the paint. That's a combination of getting to the basket and using Osun to get easy baskets. The last 6 or so games we've completely gotten away from Osun. It's hard to figure out what we are doing and why we are doing it in that regard. Using him as a screener is maybe the most logic defying thing we've done all season.

I think having Grill out definitely hurts.

I would like to see him not shoot 12 3 pointers when he's shooting as poorly as he is. Seems like we run a lot of action for him at the 3 pt line. Would be nice to try and get him some more midrange looks to start the game. But I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it.

Like someone else said. He is what he is at this point hopefully when Grill gets back they both can get hot again and win us a couple NCAA tournament games

We aren't built too much differently than OU. Both teams kind of have a base of old solid mid-low major transfers aided by a couple solid P6 type guys. The difference is OU did bring in a pretty good freshmen class this year, ranking wise, but none of their freshmen have been performing as well as Lipsey has been for us. We have the coaching edge over them no doubt.

If he doesn’t even shoot then that just collapses everything even more. I’d rather have him shoot and miss than just not attempt 3’s at all. The trickle down effect wouldn’t be good. For the good of the team he needs to get something going and just not trying isn’t the way to do that.

Exactly right. Ideally guys who don't shoot it very well aren't asked to do it often, but it's not like there's a sharpshooter on the bench not playing. You have to at least take the shots to keep the defense honest, and there aren't better options.

Quite simply, the team just needs better guard play and better shooting from those spots, essentially Grill getting healthy and Gabe/Jaren finding a rhythm again.

They're probably the most favorable match up for ISU.

Oh I agree. I wasn't saying don't shot. I'd just like to run some other action to try and get him looks other than 3 pt shots. Feel like his best games come when he hits a couple closer in and works his way out. But I know that's easier said than done.

Exactly. A common way to help shooters out of a slump is to set up some looks up for them close to the basket, run some sets that create a mismatch so they can drive to the hoop, maybe post up, and perhaps get fouled and get to the line. Build some confidence.

However, when ever those things are suggested, the responses here are that GK doesn't have enough ball handling skills, or he is too slow off the dribble, or the rest of the team doesn't have the necessary athletic ability to set these kind of things up, or the opponents have ISU figured out the second time through the round robin and there is nothing that can be done.

I'm hoping the coaching staff can find some things to try to help him out.

We run a ton of action at the 3 pt line setting screens for Gabe. I would think we could try similar action but 3-4 feet closer in to get closer shots. Run some of the stuff we did for Brockington to get some elbow looks.

Do you think he's strong in these kinds of areas? Because those are what would be generally required to find closer looks especially as the opponent counters.

For a while Gabe was using the 3 point threat to pump fake defenders and take them off the dribble. To be honest, he's looked timid in that regard and has resulted to taking contested shots late in the clock.

We are also spending way too much time setting lateral screens beyond the arc and simply weaving back and forth. It's as if the team is easily taken out of it's game in the 2nd half and neither the players or the coaches do enough to adjust. They just keep doing the same thing that isn't working (nor hasn't worked) over and over again.

Gabe is at his best when he's using a variety of looks to get his shots. Once he starts settling for (only) threes it's rarely a good thing.

How about we find out? Because right now, he's not very strong at the 3pt point shot.

The guy is a scholarship athlete starting for a competitive team in one of, if not the, toughest MBB conferences in major college basketball. He probably has some skills. It's not like he got pulled off the intramural floor to fill a roster spot.

Should the staff try nothing and just let him continue to struggle firing up step-back 3ptrs?

I'm with you and think there have to be a couple ways to mitigate some of the weaknesses we've seen for this team on offense.

But a team/staff that hasn't adjusted Rob's minutes and continues to feed him the ball given the almost unprecedented woes he has on offense through nearly 2 B12 seasons isn't likely to do that many things differently with Gabe's shot selection, either.

Before people jump down my throat, that doesn't mean this team can't make another run in the tourney.

Have you watched him dribble in traffic? Or when he's tried to take someone off the dribble?

ISU is an excellent offensive rebounding team(37 in kenpom) and are pretty bad at turning the ball over(especially lately). I would rather we get a darn shot up than turn it over.
Reminds me - my dad used to coach soph and JV girls bball back in 6-player days, when the skill level was a lot lower.

His offensive philosophy:
there's no such thing as a bad shot, because you were probably going to turn it over in 2 seconds anyway
