For what it's worth, I have heard rumblings that the switch to LED lighting will be happening at Jack Trice sooner rather than later, as they cost much less to operate.

btw thunderstruck is the worst -- I don't know why it's in all of these intros

(oh yeah and what we used to do with smoke on the water was trash)

I dunno, I keep saying that Thunderstruck would be such a great song to use if we got the crowd to
replace the “Thunder!” chants with “Cyclones!”

but now that Nebby has co-opted that song’s use it seem a little more lame now.

We had a Chicago area student at Iowa State some ago that was obsessed with meteorology, and he had built a giant tornado simulator in his garage with the use of dry ice and fans. It was featured on the Chicago local news. The simulator actually seemed pretty portable. I always thought it would be cool to fire up a simulator like that at mid field or center court as the team runs out of the locker room before the game. With some special red lighting, it would look pretty neat.

On a somewhat related note, the infamous weather beacon in downtown Des Moines was taken out of commission a number of years ago. If you're from central Iowa, you might remember "weather beacon white, colder weather in sight", "weather beacon red, warmer weather ahead", "weather beacon green, no change foreseen". Anyway, because Iowa State has one of the top ranked meteorology departments in the nation, I always thought the university should purchase the weather beacon (I think it was for sale one time for well less than $100,000) and use it to continue this tradition and to flash cardinal and gold on certain occasions like football victories.

Anyone remember how big of a deal it was that we got permanent lighting for night games? Didn't have to rent the Musco lights on the hill sides anymore.

We've come a little ways since then.

Isn't that crazy? I remember those trucks parked at the top of the hills with a big beam with lights extended over the upper decks.

Fortune to install, next to nothing to operate. Costs are coming down all the time though...

Musco is in Iowa. Think they would give us a discount, even tho they are in hawk contry?
Musco is headquartered in Oskaloosa, think they did the LED'S at Hilton. They do have a plant in Muscatine, Think they have a lot of ISU engineers working there, and are owned by Joe Crookham and others.

Oh god, we don’t need another thread debating what we chant.

I agree thunderstruck makes sense but it’s really been used to much everywhere already.

Respect the Wind.

Overall might be a little mellow but there are parts that could be used and transition into something else:

Thought this might be a fun idea for night games. Not sure if we have the lighting system, but thought it might be pretty sweet if we simulated a thunderstorm pregame (i.e. turned off the lights / video screens, maybe simulating like a power outage -- or have the screens get all fuzzy, and then flash the lights on for lightning strikes). Then start the siren + weather alert before the team enters.
This would be very awesome, don’t see it happening but would be awesome

No way the football stadium would entertain the idea of turning the lights off for a period, if only for liability reasons, it couldn't happen.

How is the liability different than in HIlton with the lights off?
