The unspoken purpose of the driveway hang is that it's an open invitation to anyone you know who might drive by. If you're on the deck, that's a more private kind of affair.
Yeah it definitely makes sense in a smaller town and if you have a family. I’m still at the point in my life where I don’t really care to know the neighbors on a personal level.

After working inside all day, I have to get outside. Smoker, grill, Blackstone are in my shop so I'm making food, tinkering on some project or enjoying a drink with anyone who stops by. We have varmints and poultry roaming the yard and they can be entertaining at times.

What's kind of weird about living in a small town is that I don't necessarily know the people who live adjacent to me that well, but I know a lot of people in the town pretty well. One of the cliches of small town life that's absolutely true is people drive, bike, or walk around town just out of boredom and to see what's going on with people they know, but don't feel compelled to necessarily reach out to.

When we bought our house, the backyard was a huge selling point, backing up to woods/trail. But we also live in a culdesac so most of the time the kids are playing out front with neighbors. Voted garage.

I'm going to be honest, the hanging out in the garage thing is wild to me. Do you just move the cars out every time you want to hang out, or you have like massive garages?
My garage is 26’ wide and 32’ long and not attached to house have plenty of room for both vehicles. Watch NBA out there wife can’t stand to watch NBA!

The inlaws are more driveway with garage door open while we are back deck. What do those have in common? Both face west and the late afternoon/evening sun.
My garage door is always closed unless backing out or pulling in! Insect free! IMG_3219.jpeg

In my garage if I want to be by myself. In the backyard with family and friends. But really, I spend more time in my basement workshop than either of those. I chose to put the TV in there instead.

For all those that watch TV in the garage, do you not have a room inside the house for yourself? I guess that was one of my requirements in home selection was to have an office / den that is my own.
