As a self proclaimed "school aficianado" I can name each of those school districts. Big fan of HS athletics and one of my favorite things to do driving home from game Friday night games is to listen to all the postgame shows from around the state, and catch scores those scores.

One question though- Avo-Ha-Shelby-Tennant, What is the Ha?

Why would anyone ever go to La Motte, IA.

FWIW Breitbach's was the place in Balltown that burned down twice almost exactly a year apart if I remember right. Awesome food.

Also Kalmes Breaktime Bar and Grill is in downtown Dubuque Kalmes Restaurant is in St Donatus.

Lavinia, IA used to be interesting. 4-5 houses on highway 20. There was an old drive in theater along time ago and grownig up the marquee was still standing there out in the middle of nowhere in a field. They recently tore it down to build a hog confinement.

Varina, IA is also interesting for the childish jokes we used to make about the name.

Knoke, IA also deserves mention since the town sign was a big green sign you'd expect to see on an interstate that said Knoke next 3 exits (all three tiny streets).

The Juntion 21 bar out in the middle of nowhere by Centralia (which is no where itself) is another.

Basically if you leave the major roads in Iowa these places are everywhere.

Alright.. you must be from around where i live.

Hard to say - I named sites that are about 200 miles apart. Plus your location says Mankato.

For the person that list listed Breda good call. Does the locker in Breda still have the slogan, "Breda Locker, You Can't Beat our Meat?".

I was just about to post the same thing almost word for word. I have a buddy on the Poky fire department that took me through there the day after the tornado. Scary stuff.

Not much love for northwest Iowa. How about Harris, May City, Wallingford, Superior, Gillett Grove and Archer? Edna, IA is so small it has to share it's one horse...

Kudos for northwest Iowa! Funny thing, my wife grew up in Wallingford & I lived their for a year or so...

Other small towns or former towns in northwest Iowa: Osgood (left over elevator & couple of rural homes now) then how about Gruver, Maple Hill, Dolliver, Cloverdale, Ritter, Germantown, and tons more! Always enjoy my drives through checking out the little towns that are just off the current highways.

Can add Gray & Hepburn as towns I've been by recently that I can think of at the moment.

EDIT: Just finished going through the thread and am amazed at how many towns listed off that I have been through or by and know where they are at, only ones I'm really missing are eastern third or so...

Also, props to the Everly & Royal mentions; grew up near Terril and often played sports there. You know your small town Iowa when the running track is gravel and you have a power pole and field goal post in the outfield of the baseball field!

Played a playoff game in Royal my Junior year of HS... Gotta love small town Northwest IA... Rodney, Climbing Hill, Pisgah, Craig, Struble, Germantown... classy joints Best chicken in NW IA- Gas Lantern, Pierson IA
Gotta love the Testicle Festival in Craig Always loved the Silver Lake Saloon in Ayrshire or the basement bar of the Thunderbird in Ruthven. Also spent quite a bit of time fishing and drinking in Linn Grove

NW Iowa was my neck of the woods. First 8 years in Cushing the moved to Le Mars. Pierson chicken is still awesome. Never been to Germantown but heard they had good food also. Westfield, Brunsville, Craig, Ireton come to mind.

I forgot all about Gruver. Played football there a few times in junior high at the old Lincoln Central school.
Royal is another good one. I hosted several of the centennial events there back in 2000.

I grew up in Spirit Lake, actually Orleans to be more specific, which is not exactly a booming metropolis either.

Is Orleans an incorporated town still or are they pretty much Spirit Lake? The city is essentially just about a mile wide strip of land surrounding the southern half of the lake isn't it?

And just to add a town to the list around the Lakes Area, how about Montgomery.

I'm not even sure to be honest. My parents' address changed 3 or 4 times while I lived at home. Sometimes it was Spirit Lake, sometimes Orleans. There is an Orleans City Hall, but I don't know if it's in use or not.

Well I did a quick search and sure enough it is still its' own entity, even has a picture of the city hall on the town website!

"A great residential community of 627 wonderful people"

Fiancé is suggesting Ware, IA. Near Lorenz

Forgot about Ware, but I believe you mean Laurens. Ware has what, 2-3 houses and what used to be an elevator; those are the kind of towns we need to be discussing. Any town that has more than a couple hundred people isn't getting lost in Iowa, that is Iowa!

Yeah, spelled Laurens wrong. Also, Beaconsfield has a population of 11.

I think it may have been mentioned, but also look up LeRoy
