Try watching the VMAs. I know MTV isn't a trend setter, but being music-industry-adjacent they are still modern. It's like watching a Japanese game show.

"Who is this person? What the heck are they wearing? I can't understand what they're saying. Why are they doing this? What the hell is happening?"
Speaking of game shows. I was incredibly disappointed when I heard the new Squid Games Challenge doesn't have the people actually die and we can't nominate people to play.

When I really want to irritate our girls I'll say something like "I finna make some eggs, want some?" and the look on their face is priceless.

Isn't it, "I'm fixn'a make some eggs?"

My daughter used the word "dope" several times last night. She used it correctly but I still said "Whatever Boomer" to her.

Rizz = charm, flirting appeal

Bet = for sure

Bussin = really good (especially “straight bussin”)

Drip = clothes/accessories

Skibidi toilet - I have no idea
My wife just recently tried to use the slang "Rizz" but instead said "Jizz".
Hilarity ensued and I told the kids not to look up that word.

And I think there’s a difference between teens being bad people/“monsters” and teens being immature/annoying. Because all of us were annoying/had weird slang as teens. You grow out of it.

You can’t compare teens to adults, you have have to compare them to other teens. And I’d say teens today are doing pretty well compared to previous generations. For example, they seem much more aware of emotions, mental health, and consent than previous generations.

If I remember correctly, they are also engaging in less sex, and have lower rates of smoking, drinking, and illicit drug use than previous generations

I agree, and those are all good things. But did they need to become weenies about everything at the same time? There's just this expectation that nothing should be hard, or require hard work. Just seem unmotivated, unambitious, not driven. Just waiting for stuff to happen.

IDK maybe its just me being an old coot and its my imagination.

I really think it’s because you’re old and it’s in your head. Everyone complains about younger generations. Socrates and Plato were complaining about younger generations

Edit: I just found this LA Times article which I think does a good job explaining that younger generations have pretty much always been criticized. People were criticizing “the greatest generation” when they were kids

2nd edit: the article does make political arguments later, but the initial part is good for just showing how teens have been viewed in the past

That is true. But those were the good ole days. These kids need to stay off my damn lawn.
Some people get nostalgia for classic movies, music, or TV shows. For me, it's the internet of the 90s.

We're in a suburban KC neighborhood and my daughter goes to a 6A school. She is extremely candid about what goes on in her school. The amount of sex that happens is definitely not less. Kids are taking far more prescription drugs than you'd think, and she said there is always someone vaping in their bathrooms.

There is less drinking and driving than when I was her age, so they are definitely smarter than my generation as far as that goes. Also, their parties are much smaller due to the suburban setting, so the out-of-control alcohol abuse is more contained.

But a large number of students have a good buzz before their Friday night football games and party afterwards. I think many parents allow it just so they know where their kids are and so they can keep tabs on them.

I second this, as someone actively in high school, you would mistaken to think this stuff doesn’t happen, for me a know less about drug use but definitely a lot of vaping and drinking

I've officially hit that point where I have no idea what my kids are saying half the time when describing something or someone. My kid last night said his teacher was "drippin" and I figured that meant she was lactating or something... nope, means she was cool or looked cood (not sure which).

Let's help each other out - what are kids saying nowadays and what the **** does it mean?
Bruh....

The previous generation has complained about the next generation at least since the ancient Greeks:
The counts of the indictment are luxury, bad manners, contempt for authority, disrespect to elders, and a love for chatter in place of exercise. …
Children began to be the tyrants, not the slaves, of their households. They no longer rose from their seats when an elder entered the room; they contradicted their parents, chattered before company, gobbled up the dainties at table, and committed various offences against Hellenic tastes, such as crossing their legs. They tyrannised over the paidagogoi and schoolmasters.

There is nothing new under the sun.
