Ya, we could have used him, maybe not right away, but down the road. If he doesn't come, lets hope for some bigs to sign soon.

I'm not sure if anyone from our staff was there...I'd like to have Gibbs on our roster, but it's certainly not the end of the world if we don't land him...hopefully their "good news" on the way is something other than him committing, but I strongly doubt it.

Gonzaga is not in Washington, D.C. It is in the state of Washington, on the west cost. Seriously people.

Did you know that Washington D.C. is not really a state?

The earth is also not flat.

Amelia Earhart was a pilot

And George Bush Jr's dad is George Bush Sr.

I think we need to sit Gibbs down with Alex Thompson. Maybe he can talk him into making the right decision right off the bat instead of waiting 3 years before he gets to play for the right team!

If Mark Few hits the high road for a big school and his replacement is a dud--that could be a real possibility! Send in the reinforcements, I vote for Freddy on what it meant for him to be a cyclone, and let's get him now!

PsychedClone or goldmember, what are you guys hearing?

I spoke to someone close to the situation yesterday evening. There wasn't any news at that time nor do I believe is any news yet. Barring a minor miracle, all indications point to a Zag commitment soon. The longer it takes, the better the chance we have. At this point, I'd say odds are definitely something less than 50%. Should be some news soon.

Mark Few's long-time assistant, Bill Grier, accepted the head coaching job at University of San Diego this spring. Grier's contract with GU had promised that he'd get the head coaching job at GU if Mark Few left. If you were a GU fan like me, would you not read into that a strong likelihood that Bill Grier knew that Few wasn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future?

Coach Few has previously been approached by some big-time schools about making a change, including Indiana and University of Washington (before Lorenzo Romar was hired). He has expressed no interest in changing and has repeatedly said that he already has a great job.

Question for Mods: A number of posts on this board seem to make direct pleas to Grant to attend ISU, and it seems like everyone for miles around is pressuring the kid. Are you not skittish about the possibility that what is said here might land the school in trouble with NCAA compliance officers? The mods on GUBoards.com run a pretty sharp pencil in deleting or editing any thread they think might raise recruiting violation issues applicable to boosters, especially direct appeals addressed to a PSA.

He might be a stud, but he is a guard and we need post help more so than guard help. We already have Buckley and Eikmeier coming in, I just don't see where he really fits in over time, Garrett and Brister will have four years, Boozer will have four or five, Peterson will have two, Haluska will have two, than you add in Buckley and Eikmeier, we need post help more than we need Gibbs, you want the big Iowa guys, but he might have a tough time finding playing time.

I wish I could be more help than I am. I just knew about 5-6 weeks ago that it was ISU, Wisconsin and UNI, and Gibbs was waiting to see if the Zags would offer before he made any final decisions. Once the Zags offered, and UNI signed a guard with their last scholarship, it became a 3 horse race with the obvious finalists of ISU and Gonzaga. I'm not going to speculate on who has the best shot, because I know no more than the next guy, since my source was from a school that is no longer recruiting Gibbs. I would like to think the longer it takes for a decision the better for ISU, but Gonzaga has done a good job recruiting in the last couple of weeks.

The NCAA has better things to worry about, I would hope, like making sure Kansas is never held accountable for anything.

If you think a message board "plea to the masses" is a compliance issue it is clear you aren't familiar with the big12 and BCS schools in general. ;-)

Zag, I sense hostillity from your side. I hope you don't take any jestful licks directed at your town or team as an insult. We are the Iowa State Cyclones, far from arrogant and respectful to all.

To start this is IMO only, not CF. I understand if a booster calls or initiates contact with a recruit that is a violation, i.e. posts on the recruits personal website. This is a site that the recruit would have to find and read on their own. If this is a violation, all college based message boards would have to be shut down, including yours. Everyone that posts anything about their favorite University could be seen as pointing out the qualities of said University.

NCAA sanctions because I'm saying "I want Grant Gibbs to come to ISU" on a message board is the last thing I'm worried about, right behind giant meteors.

I'd have to agree with chadm here... I don't think school message boards can be considered "trying to contact a recruit".

However going to somebody's homepage/facebook might be considered differently.

Now if somebody were to post something that states they would offer something to Gibbs if he chose Iowa State and told Gibbs to PM him if he saw the post... then yeah... but I haven't seen anything on this site. And being this is the internet... who's to say a Hawkeye fan couldn't come over to this site and post just that in an attempt to get ISU in trouble.

All that being said... I don't see anything wrong with the posts on this site in regards to recruiting violations.

Edit: Technically I could probably contact him directly myself due to the "If you work for Student Admissions" exception. However I think I'll let the guy make the decision on his own.

Thanks for the answer. Makes sense. However, the GUBoard mods are super sensitive about any posts which are addressed directly to the recruit. We can and do talk about the recruit ad infinitum and list a hundred reasons he should choose GU, but direct appeals, as if the recruit were the only reader, most often will be edited or deleted by a Mod. They're probably too cautious, but reading here was a bit of a culture shock, since the rules are so different.

And, no, to the previous poster, I'm not sensitive or defensive about Spokane or Gonzaga. I love this town (Spokane) and I love the Zags, but I think chadm can attest that I take the negative posts about GU in good humor. I'm a guest here and have enjoyed your board. Y'all seem like nice people and great fans.

I wish you the best of luck for the season.

Just a guess but b/c he is higher rated than either of those players, maybe he fits infront of those guys. I know ratings don't mean much but I find it funny that you mention 2 walk ons and 3 lower ranked recruits as a problem for him to fit in to our future plans.

That could be due to the GU board donating money to ISU in the GU board's name. CF doesn't do that at all.

Or, you've got ownership being overly cautious. That isn't bad, just a big extreme IMO.
